Pros:
Power, styling, handling, refinement, brakes
Cons:
Notchy shifter, clunky differential, potential glass jaw (rear subframe cracking)
Overall, an excellent driver's car. The refined power, styling, engineering and handling are what the M3 promises and delivers. It's nice having near exotic car performance and handling with room for four and daily livability.
On the negative side, the shifter is a bit notchy, especially when cold and the rear end - M-Diff gear lash presumably - is as clunky as an old pickup truck, which it ought not to be what with only 29K on the clock and on its second diff.
I also wonder/worry about the potential for rear subframe cracking, which seems like a perennial and inexcusable (for the E46 too!) problem for 3-Series models and derivatives.

description of the diff sound. clunk.
Cons:

My 2004 M3 with 44K also has a really clunky differential. VERY careful application of the clutch and gas (at all times) will eliminate this sound. But for example, say you are pulling out of a side road onto a main highway. You are on a slight hill facing upward before you pull out. You ease out the clutch and start moving and suddenly a hidden car comes flying down the highway forcing you to quickly abandon your plans to pull out. You mash in the clutch with one foot and hit the brakes with the other --> Clunkedy clunk goes the differential and driveshaft.

Pros:
Great power, Excellent Handling, Everyday car
Cons:
Maintance cost, SMG gearbox issues
Havent actually owned one but have driven many in the past including other generations of M3s and I have to say, if it was my own money, there is no question or doubt that this would be the car for me. The S54 is just bliss, the sound and the feel of the climax building up as the REVs build up is like a process of a man falling in love...
Surely this new love of mine isnt perfect, there are some small thats that have annoyed me and put me off...SMG gearbox are quirky at times and reliablity isnt great, floating brake calipers on a flagship model? excuse me but where are the fixed calipers that I see on mid ranged Mercs and top of the line Japanese?
These are just minor issues that I can deal with...its a bit like having a great gf with just a few bad habits... I still love her!

Image, performance, styling, daily use, a sportscar with a descent trunk and real seats in the back
Cons:

speeding tickets, weak brakes on a track,

this is an icon in the auto-industry. Every sportscoup is benchmarked against it. It has a descent fuel economy and a real boot and rearseats. One moment you go for your groceries and 5 minutes later you rev the hell out of it on a track...without changing anything. Best of both worlds !

The E46 M3 is an exciting car to drive and own. It’s a visceral experience from the time to I approach it to the time I get out and beep the door locks. The brilliant looks get my full attention every time I walk up to it. The robust and supported feeling of the seats, shift lever, pedals, and steering wheel are a welcome physical engagement. Turning the key results in a nearly exotic and just loud enough exhaust burble. The driving experience is completely beyond any regular production BMW I’ve owned or driven. The intense forward thrust is balanced by incredible binders and extraordinary road holding and feedback. This is the only car I’ve ever driven where having the windows open makes the experience better for the enthralling engine and exhaust sounds. My 5 series did a good balancing act of giving me a confident connection to the road while isolating me from the noisy world outside. The M3 makes me feel like the road is mine for the taking – with this little coupe I can do anything. My other 3s were good balanced cars but I was constantly finding the limits of performance. The M3 can be frustrating because it’s only on rare occasion can I find enough open road for it to gobble up – and those moments are worth waiting for. Now that I’ve reached the top of this mountain, I’m going to take in the view for a while and keep my little grey M3. However, my gaze continues to be drawn to a distant and higher peak looming in the distance – a 993 Turbo might be the next mountain to climb.
