Default Is the US on the downfall?

I read some articles from Fortune magazines, Newsweek, Businessweek, Times, and so on, along with numerous lengthy discussions with colleagues, friends and family, and surprisingly, some (if not most) of them are all somewhat in an agreement that the US is in the downturn and we could be watching the fall of the second Roman empire.

Now, are we a crumbling empire? Discuss!

In the words of Ulysses Everett McGill, "Damn, we're in a tight spot." However, I don't think the US is down for the count.

If you look at and read on how many engineers that we graduated, compared with China and India, you'll be surprise; 70,000/yr (us) vs. 300,000/yr (them)

Every empire to date has gone through the same cycle but as the centuries pass, the cycle has accelerated. We are no longer the best or strongest in a lot of categories and it will only be a matter of time before we lose what advantages we currently hold. The next empire to rise will be in the east, most likely China.

very true... US may not be crumbling but its not growing stronger either... China and India will be the next super powers… they could be already but have chosen not to make it known...

Bush says to china "hey don't do that or else..."

China replies "we are prepared to loose 300 million people, how many can you lose?"

I thought so too . I've seen myself on how Chinese citizens are more driven, dilligent, than us in almost every aspect - we've taken everything for granted and as a result, a new generation of cushy mushy emerged to replace the school of hardknox generation. We are losing the edge on everything!

Correct, both China and India will be the next superpower. It amazes me to see people still think that we are still the undisputed world superpower

Fortune magazine has an interesting insights on the issue that you just mentioned. I remember the article said that in order for the US to be able to maintain our edge, we need another overhaul in our education system, we need to retrain our workers to regain our competitive advantage

It's already happening, the world of high finance is now being move to Shanghai. In the foreseeable future, NY will be just like London in the 18th century, the Netherlands, and Antwerp circa 1500s. the R&D is now in the process of moving to Mumbai, Advance heavy naval construction is going to be in Dalian...
