As a prospective purchaser, that doesn't sound like very good news to me. I have always hoped that it was an isolated defect or cowboys at the export/import point. There has been very little reported for the past three months, it seems odd that they would be making such a drastic announcement. A recall is a colossal financial disaster for any company much less a high priced purveyor like BMW.

Thanks MJS, now that is information.
Big question for recent and current buyers is when was this "kit" installed as a matter of normal production? Getsmart, any inside scoop on this question? There are a lot of anxious prospective owners that would love to know if they will be installing kits or not. |

This is scary, i really dont think I would trust anyone to do that type of work, specially since they have not done it before on that engine, plus any small variation while tightening bolts etc
my car is 10/01 production what about any possible damage that the engine may have sustained , I have had a noticeable power loss in my car, that the dealer has no clue what the cause is I wish they would just replace the whole d**n engine Gilbert 02 titanium cab ![]() Last edited by gflores71; Sat, Mar-22-2003 at 01:59:36 AM.. |

Okay here's the scoop:
The Service Action referenced on roadfly and above post came out Thursday 3/20. (Read above link) As you can see, it involves a "kit" for specific production dates/VINs referenced. All cars after those production dates/VINs were built with a different supplier's part's and are not defective. By BMW's definition, a recall is something mandated by the NHTA, a "Service Action" is a voluntary effort. By voluntarily implementing this new kit, it should relieve them from replacing entire blown engines moving forward. BMWNA will notify the dealers and the dealers must nofity the owners to make arrangements for a service visit. (BMWNA will likely notify the owners directly as well, but this is not confirmed.) BMWNA will not move forward until they are certain the dealers are stocked with enough parts to do this with minimal delay to the owners. I asked the question, does a guy from germany come out and open my engine, or is it the dealer newbie's that get the assembly line task? He suggested that when you make your appt, request a Level 1 certified technician work on your car and request to meet and greet him. (Putting a face to a car humanizes the experience. ) You still get 100,000 mile warranty.... hope this helps, TC
