Paddles on the M3 are wheel mounted. As such, they turn with the wheel. On Ferrari's they are dash mounted and do not turn.

I have a 6-speed, I've never driven an SMG. I was curious whether the paddles are fixed on the steering column or move with the wheel as the question was asked by someone I know who was considering one. I'm not sure why that question is scary!

they should come up with a shifter for the left foot for smg. like, you move a pedal left for downshift and right for up. that way, you can shift while turning your steering wheel. i dunno. maybe this is a bad idea.

It's a good thought, but that would hinder one's ability to left foot trail brake, which is a great advantage of SMG. On a track, it isn't really a great idea to be shifting mid corner anyway as you can upset the balance of the car that way. Generally, shifts are made before and after corneres. On the street if I have to shift in the middle of a turn, I use the floor shifter instead of the paddles.

it's made so you can keep both hands on the wheel at ALL times... if it weren't the case, it would defy the point of SMG... IMO the way Ferrari has it setup is counterproductive, 'cause you still have to take your hands off the wheel/shuffle them... If anything, they should be the way they are in the M3 in a race car (ferrari) and the way ferrari has it set up in a more "street" car, like the M3... but I like them the way they are

well if you're gonna have to shuffle your hands anyways in order to rotate the wheel enough to make any given sharp corner, wouldn't it not matter?

i'd rather have them mounted to the column rather than the wheel so i wouldn't have to wonder wherer my downshift paddle went, it would always be consistent...

just my .02, though

in terms of performance driving, you wouldn't shift during a turn
