Default Charlemvgne's Velvet Blue e46 M3 Build Thread

Hi everyone, my name is Chaz and welcome to my Velvet Blue e46 M3 Build Journal. Just a little background, my love of BMWs started with a 330ci. I've always loved the e46 body style and loved the NA S54 engine even more. I've wanted an e46 M3 for years and now I finally own one!

2002 BMW e46 M3

Specs
  • BMW Individual - Velvet Blue/Imola Red* (Originally Dove)
  • Slicktop (CSL CF)
  • 6 Spd (Originally SMG)
  • Bought @ 126xxx mi

Bought the car pretty much bone stock and have huge plans for it in the future. I already have a bunch of parts waiting to go on the car.

Now the real fun...(Please Read)

After driving the car from NJ(where I bought the car) to MI, I noticed the engine had an unusually loud ticking noise. After searching and searching, I found out that the car had worn down camshaft rockers. Not knowing what the REAL source of the problem was, I went ahead and replaced the rockers myself. After replacing them the noise went away.. but only for a little while. After more searching I found out that the engine was experiencing low oil pressure problems causing the rockers to wear down prematurely.

This time I brought it to a local Indy to help me fix the problem, and had the main bearings and oil pump replaced. After picking up the car, all seemed fine and dandy until the oil pressure light came back on!

So now that winter is over, I've decided to remove the engine and have it rebuilt. I could use the knowledge of everyone here to give me some advice where needed. Thanks!

Here are a few photos of the worn down Camshaft Rockers..

Here you can see how flat they are which caused the LOUD ticking

What an absolutely insane colour combo. Thats awesome.
Sorry I can't be of more help with your mechanical issues, but know that whatever you put into this car will be worth it.

Here are few pics of my Engine Rebuild Journey.

Decided to drop the engine from the bottom - NO LIFT! In hindsight I probably woudn't recommend doing it without a lift.

IMG-4755 by Charles Franco, on Flickr

All the engine harness/accessories removed. Next are vanos and cam Removal

IMG-4775 by Charles Franco, on Flickr

Cylinder Head Removed! I was surprised to find ARP Head Studs and Bolts - probably means the head was rebuilt/decked before..

Can't say I'm surprised at all that that car turned out to be a lemon. Was obvious from the original FS ad that nothing about that car was original or legit. Funny that the interior went from grey to black to now Imola...

I hope to god you didn't pay anywhere near what he was asking, especially now that you have to rebuild the engine already...

Yeah I should have been more careful, but the car is pretty clean besides the engine - Living in the Midwest has caused me to absolutely hate rust (I'd rather deal with mechanical problems than rust problems). I knew the interior was originally dove when I bought it, he changed it from black to imola too. But there was definitely dishonesty and misleading in the FS post and other things he was hiding from me aswell.

Rebuilding the engine is more to fix the oil pressure problem once and for all instead of trying to hunt it down one thing after another, plus I really enjoy working on cars and like gaining the experience.

I forget exactly what he was asking, but i definitely did NOT pay near asking.
