Default Geoff's '01 M3 Journal

I'm starting this journal to keep track of the progress of my newly acquired 2001 TiAg M3. It's a 100% option car with black interior, one owner car that was purchased with 100,349 miles on the clock. It was owned by a long time customer of my friend's independent BMW repair shop. It started making a bottom end noise and decided with the potential cost of repairs and being 71 years old it was time to let it go. Before taking it home my friend took care of the rod bearing and got all services up to date for me. With it being as mechanically perfect as it can be the fun begins. As she sits, my plan is to make it a fun weekend driver and capable DE car

Here it is the first day home:

And with the rest of it's family:

I decided to take some pictures of the car in it's original state before making as modifications. I figure they'd be nice to have incase I ruin it. You know, poor choices in modding and what not.

-------------------

Week 2 of ownership I decided to install a group of parts I consider to be an essential starter pack. It's comprised of LED tail lights, clear front bumper reflectors, a regrettably loud exhaust, CSL style front lip and diffuser, and suspension.

After a week of shopping for suspension I was fortunate enough to find a clean set of AST 4100 single adjustable coilovers. I had a set of their 4200s on my old track prepped E36 M3 and liked them a lot. I'm hopeful for the same outcome. I decided to spend a saturday to get everything installed. I pulled the car into the shop at 8:45am and was finished by 12:30pm. The only issues I ran into were the sway bar end links were too long. I should have known better. I set the ride height to "good enough for now" and decided I was hungry. Here is the end results:

-------------------

I decided a shake down for the car was necessary and what better way to test your car then to enter round 1 of the Redline Time Attack Series.

I was able to get enough break in miles on the rod bearing about 3 days before the event. My friend did an oil change for me and installed some E36 M3 sway bar end links so that I can lower the front a bit more. I was fortunate enough to have a co-worker willing to do an alignment for me after hours the Thursday before the event:

I decided to start off with -3.5 degrees camber up front and -2.5 degrees in the rear. Toe was set at 1/8" toe out in front and stock toe setting in the rear. Typically I wouldn't start with that much camber up front but with the stock size Michelin Pilot Super Sports I figured I could use it.
-------------------

Saturday came soon enough and after about three weeks in here we are at Willow Springs International Raceway.

It's been a couple years since my last track day and my times were less than stellar. I ended up only running a 1:42.726 as my best of the day. Not a very impressive time by any means but I was still good enough for 3rd place in enthusiast class.

Overall the car did better than expected. The oil temps and water temps behaved themselves. The tires understeered quite a bit but after some pressure adjustments I was able to make it manageable. Stock brake pads didn't inspire confidence at the end of the front straight. The suspension managed the bumps of turn 8 well and the car felt planted.

Here are some pics on track:

---------------

Well, that's it for now. I'll post again once my wheels get back from getting refinished. I have a set of 18x9.5 et18 Forgeline RSs that I've ran on 3 other cars I've owned in the past. I'm hoping they're going to look as good as I envision in my head. Add some stickier, wider tires and race pads. Those are the changes I'd like to make before round 2 of RLTA.

Lowered on OEM 18's; such a classic look that never gets old. I can't tell you how many times I've thought of ditching the works and running square OEM 18's.

Of course man. I'll try to find my communicator so I don't have to yell this time.
