Default My tribute to Motorsport and M community

Hi guys,

My name is Nicole - since nobody knows me here (and I am using my husband's account), I would start by saying that I am not someone that would be called a "car person", but I do appreciate the BMW community and I do LOVE to put my foot down on my husband's M3!

I decided to create my own version of a "build journal", not sure where to post it, so decided to place it here.

THIS THREAD WILL SHOW YOU THE PROCESS OF THE MAKING OF THE ARTWORK BELOW
if you're interested, scroll along

About me:
I am an artist and a math teacher. All of my works are, well, quite calculated

What is this?
This is a paper folding technique commonly referred to as "quilling"

Why am I doing it?:
After years of passively observing the passion that the BMW enthusiasts have for their M cars, I decided to make an artwork for the community.

Purpose of this project:
I am in the middle of my "Alphabet project", so I decided to pick M for Motorsport (with much convincing from my husband).
I realize that this is not a "cute" community and my challenge is to create a piece of art that portrays the excitement of Motorsport.

Disclosures:
There is no secondary gain for me in this project whatsoever

My brief research:
As you all know, M stands for Motorsport — the high performance sport division of BMW. In search of the true colors of the M stripes, I found more than what I bargained for. After scouring the Internet, finding nothing but inconsistencies (I did find good history and documentaries), I decided I needed several BMW-made 'M' emblems to settle the color dispute. As it turns out, BMW made significant changes to its Motorsport division colors. TWICE.

In 1985, BMW released their first Motorsport car, the legendary E28 M5, with stripe colors blue, purple, and orange. In 1992, light blue, primary blue, and dark red. In 2007, a shade of light blue different from the previous, dark blue, and primary red. Why? Go figure.

What would it look like when finished?:
Here is the link to the other letters I did earlier. Each is unique.

Many of you here are perfectionists, so I hope that there are some who can appreciate this

I will be updating this blog as I continue to work on the project

Tools I use:

NOW TO THE ARTWORK!

SELECTING COLORS:
This was quite an ordeal. Perfect match colors are copyrighted, so this is the best I could do

I used exact dimensions of symbols and various items (arrows, tach, etc) that are used on various M cars. These are perfectly traced and accurate in dimensions items

This is awesome! Not sure what's better, the creativity or the execution. Great work!

wow! very intricate and I have much respect for you and this art, bmw has had some pretty cool art cars over the years by Stella, Warhol etc as you may know. would you maybe sell this piece after you are finished?

the colours date back a little longer though, and i dont believe orange was an intention rather fading red, May of 1972 with crimson, violet and turquiose, then in 1976 on 3.5 csl turbo pink, violet and turquiose. 1986 on the GTP they went back to crimson, violet and turquiose

Glad you guys like it
Well, I think that the "orange" in the early M cars was this way from the very beginning. I bought brand new M badges from BMW (pictured above) to make sure I match the colors correctly. The first is from E30 M3, the second is from E46 M3 and the last is from E92 M3

Glad you posted Nikki. Your work is outstanding. Seeing this photographed pales in comparison to in person. I'm still shocked with how well you hide the glue and how small these works of art are.

Keep the updates coming!

btw; We are craving Thai Cafe

A third of the way in and dozens of hours later, I realized that I made a mistake and there is a better design solution to arranging the objects in a much better way...

So I scrapped the work and started again

Now the traction control light is going to be in its correct color segment

Today's progress:

Arranged the BMW roundel with the BMW colors in the right color block. Now everything is in its correct place! Things aren't glued to the board yet, so alignment will be better once they are
