Default DavidM310's 2003 TiAg M3 Journal

Welcome to my journal!

Current status of my M3 as of April 3rd, 2016.

I created this journal to be able to share and document the maintenance and changes I will be doing with my e46 M3 as I go along.

Prior to purchasing the M3 I owned a Buick Grand National for 6 years.

Something that draws me into a car is not only appearance and performance but also it's history.

Just like the M car and it's extensive background in performance and racing, the Grand National had it's own unique history.

It was the black sheep of its days, a time when performance was at an all time low and emission standards were through the roof.

Along comes this blacked out, turbocharged GM G-Body that was pulling faster time slips in the straights than Ferraris, Lambos and Porsches.

I spent a great deal of time and funds on this car. I had the engine rebuilt, transmission rebuilt, rear end was a 3.42 LSD. I upgraded the cooling system, the exhaust system, and the brakes. All it needed for it to be complete was a paint job as it had a thin, crappy lacquer paint job from the factory. Knowing that I would not be able to make this car handle the way I wanted it to, I decided to cut my losses.

Looking for something more modern that had an overall package of performance, handling, braking I opted for the e46 M3.

I purchased this car out of Gulfport, Mississippi on April 25th 2015 with 94k miles. I drove 1172 miles round trip to pick up the M3.

While I was digging through trying to find as much information as I could about the car, I stumbled upon this.

Friday April 24th I picked up a trailer at my local UHaul after I got out of work. I left at 1am Saturday morning and arrived at Gulfport, MS around 11am. After giving the car a final look over we made a deal and I loaded the M3 on to the trailer.

I stayed the night in Gulfport, MS and left Gulfport at 5am and arrived home in Converse, TX at 2pm.

First thing I did was swap the oil/filter and air filter. I used Castrol TWS Professional 10w-60. Seeing as TX gets pretty warm, I removed the old window tint and went darker with 5% out back and 20% Driver/Passenger. I also had the A/C system serviced and recharged.

The next item on the list was to show some attention to the paint. Paint is in great condition with the exception of the normal rock chips on the front end. The paint was a bit rough to the touch so I started with a Clay bar. From there I progressed to a medium cut Rubbing Compound on a medium cutting pad. I moved on to a Polishing Compound on a polishing pad. I then applied 2 layers of Glaze on a finishing pad. I sealed it over with 2 layers of Wax on a finishing pad. The paint is nice and smooth now. There is still very minor swirls and looks like I'll be going a bit grittier on the compound or pad.

Lightbulb Re: DavidM310's 2003 TiAg M3 Journal

Since it was time to do Inspection II/Valve Adjustment, I took the recommendation and sought out the help of forum member Hacksaw. I contacted him and he got me set up on the items I needed to purchase so that he can service the M3. I bought most of the parts from ECS Tuning and a few things from my local parts store.

Luckily I did not have to travel far as Hacksaw is only a good stone throw away from my home.

While Hacksaw serviced the vehicle he looked at the Vanos system and I was happy to see that the tabs were still intact.

He recommend that we do some preventive maintenance on the Vanos system and go with a few parts from Beisan. I took his expert recommendation and he started on the disassembly of the Vanos.

Shortly after Hacksaw was done with the maintenance, I brought the car back over so that he can assist with the TTFS SMG Tune. There was no downtime as I did not have to wait to receive my cable and Hacksaw worked out all the details.

All I can say is that the M3 is more enjoyable and more responsive.

After seeing the thread on E9X Wheels on our E46s and seeing Hacksaw's M3 with them I knew I was going to be doing some wheel swapping soon.
I found a forum member local to me selling his E9X Wheels from his M3. After giving him a low ball offer not knowing he had good tires on the wheels, I met up with him at his home and he gave me a good deal on them. Thank you!

The tires are Michellin Pilot Super Sports 245/40/18 and 265/40/18.

Bringing them home!
