Default Foul odor comming from the heater

So, last night I had the heater completley off for the whole day. So, I go and pick up a friend and she asks for me to turn the heater on, since she was standing outside for a little bit. I fire it up, but right as I turned it on a foul odor came out of it, it smelt really musty. So, I turned it off and just told her to resort to the seat warmers. I have a friend with an 03 who has this same problem, do any of you guys know a quick and effective fix to it?
