Default DIY - CSL Harness Flap & Map Sensor

This is a thread for those who have done the CSL Map and CSL parts conversion to share with others how to make the harness. This DIY will show you how to make the harness however the install is still on you. As those who have done the install will attest it is almost impossible to show how to install the wires. Making the harness is the easy part and the install is the trick part.

If you have a basic understanding of wires you will figure it out as it is strait forward enough. You will have to do some soldering as a heads up.

Parts Needed:

X3 --- 12520007172 --- 0.5-1.0 contact with wire for flap motor plug
X1 --- 12521427222 --- 3-POL plug housing for flap position sensor
X6 --- 12520007170 --- 0.2-0.5 contact with wire for flap position sensor housing
X1 --- 12527507526 --- 3-POL plug housing for MAP sensor
X1 --- 12527502932 --- 0.2-0.5 contact with wire for MAP sensor plug housing
X1 --- 12521427615 --- 2-POL plug housing for flap motor
X3 --- 61130005197 --- 0.2-0.5mm Bushing contact
X1 --- 12517508831 --- Corrugated wire wrap

20 gauge wire (I used solid wire from lows in a 2X20 spool. This is 2 wires of 20 gauge wire in 1 spool)
T-Taps to connect wires to the harness that shares connections
Shrink tube (Various sizes and colors if you want to be creative)

Hardware for CSL map sensor
X1 --- 13627833561 --- CSL Map Sensor
X1 --- 13417833597 --- CSL Map Sensor Air Rail
X1 --- 07119902626 --- Fillister head screw
X1 --- 13417830384 --- O-ring
X1 --- 64218367179 --- Hose clamp L16-30

Master pin install table.

Map Sensor
Pin 1 - DME 3 - Pin 7 - (T-Tap Needed)
Pin 2 - DME 3 - Pin 17 - (Replace)
Pin 3 - DME 3 - Pin 18 - (Open)

Flap Motor
Pin 2 - DME 1 - Pin 8 - (Open)
Pin 2 - DME 2 - Pin 9 - (Open)

Flap Position Sensor
Pin 1 - DME 3 - Pin 20 - (T-Tap Needed)
Pin 2 - DME 3 - Pin 1 - (Replace)
Pin 3 - DME 3 - Pin 14 - (T-Tap Needed)

Temp Sensor - Only if you remove and not tap into MAF wires
Pin 1 - DME 3 - Pin 22 - (Replace)
Pin 2 - DME 3 - Pin 25 - (T-Tap Needed)

Note: Open means that pin place is open so plug in and go.

Map Sensor Harness creation

You will need to make this completely from scratch. Pre run one length of wire from the sensor to the DME with a little extra for fudge factor. (not much. As a note you will need to solder two connection to the created pin as shown below.

Take your 20 gauge wire and strip about 1/4 inch of cover or a tad less.

Put the wire into the X3 --- 61130005197 connector. (small silver ones on right)

I recommend soldering the wire to the pin for a good connection. This is not mandatory but I did it anyway. All you are technically supposed to do is put the pin to the first crimp point, crimp the tabs down to the wire and then crimp the second points onto the cover. I prefer better connections hence solder. The grommet is optional if you want to add it. That part is 61138366245 X 3 which I forgot in my install.

Once you have soldered the end connectors on for the plug, you will on Pins 2 and 3 add the black wires with the connectors already. You will need to match the length of wire to pin 1. This means a short length of 20 gauge wire soldered to the OE BMW wire.

Once you solder the 2 connection, use shrink wrap or electrical tape. I would suggest shrink wrap as it makes it easier to push the wire through the corrugated tube.

See completed plug below. It is the teal one.

CSL Flap Motor

These parts are far easier as the wires are all pre-made and all you have to do is a little soldering. Take the white wires with the blue grommets and push them into the plugs. 5 Total wires are used.

Once you have all the wires in you will need to solder some 20 gauge wire to length the 2 pin sensor as this is the longest run. You will add about a foot of wire and then solder two of the black pinned OE BMW wires to the other end. (ALWAYS check lengths as routing and such can very lengths)

The three position sensor you will only need to add 1 OE black wire to pin to the DME and 2 same length 20 gauge wires for T-Taps. This is a short run so no need for to much extra wire.

NOTE: Here is where personal preference come in. OE is basically electrical tape wrapped if you want to try to match CSL. If you choose you can either use shrink tube, that BMW cloth looking tape or even use the corrugated tube. All work and it a way to make it your own. I did CSL way of just electrical tape.

Installing into the DME

Here is where DIY is hard to share with everyone. Taking images of the DME is near impossible so you just have to figure this out a little. Pins are laid out above so you can figure it out.

To help you with the pins, the link below is a good diagram of the DME.
http://www.unofficialbmw.com/images/...lectronic1.pdf

For those pins that are replace / open, pull the DME plug and you will see you can SLIDE it to the side. This loosens the pin holder so you can modify the pins in the plug. (BE VERY CAREFUL DOING THIS or you can remove more pins than you want.) All you do is push the new pin in and your done.

For the connection that need T-Taps, those are the easier as you just trace the pin and then tap the wire. The images below should show you kind of what to expect and off what major wire harness bundle

Notes:

Making the harness is not overly complex. If you have a armature with clamps to hold the wires together when you solder it makes this go faster. I had to do the weigh it down with plies method to keep the buggers form moving.

The pin install to the DME is the cross and double check part. There are numbers on the plug if you look but they are darn small.

**** Make sue before you shrink wrap any wire you label them. You need to make sure you have the right pins. If you don't you will need a volt meter to test which pin is which. Not a big deal but if you plan ahead it won't take as long ***

Take your time on this. I recently made 3 harness for members here and have it down pretty fast now. If you are making your own take your time, double check lengths and your connections.

Routing the wires into the DME are done through the per-existig grommets. It is a pain to push the wires through and you might need a fishing device but the can go in through the two area for the snorkel wires and map sensor.

If someone wants me to make a harness PM me and we can chat. These are a little of a time suck but still fun to build.

Those who have done this please share notes and better ways to build these. This post is not the only way to do this so if you have a better way, please share with the community.

Hardware note

If you install the CSL Map Rail, be carful when you uninstall the stock one. There is a small tube at the back of the rail that need to be remove carefully. I am sure many of the people here that did their installs popped this off and were like WTF? Here is a helpful pic for those considering the upgrade.
