Talking What's Up M3Forum: Fuch EPS Edition

Yup, I got an air-cooled 911.

I wasn't planning on doing this so soon, but with classic car/air-cooled 911 market going through the roof, I felt like I had to get on it before the opportunity got away(1015, get on this before the market gets completely away). Long story short, my years of eying up the market turned into only two weeks of searching, and resulted in finding a really nice example of what I wanted.

The end result was a 1985 3.2 Carrera coupe. My perfect blend of unassisted steering, unassisted clutch, no ABS, no traction control, a wonderfully fiddly transmission, and mechanical everything. The steering is immediate and unbelievably feelsome, the shifter works at it own speed, the engine grumbles about everything, the car feels rock solid despite weighing ~2500lbs, cable drive throttle and clutch are perfection, the view is excellent and you can see what every part of the car is doing at all times.

It is the most fundamentally different driving experience I have ever had. Nothing relates in the slightest.

I'm never selling this car.

Few shots around the car:

Safely arrived home via the trailer. I saw no reason to subject it to driving through New York city and general highway awfulness. Plus, I want to give a thorough once over before I go on a 4 hour trip.

Yes, even at 6'5" I fit fine. I do have a steering wheel spacer on the way though to bring it up off the dash. And eventually I will probably swap it to the Momo Protipo.

Thou hast found thine holy grail.

That's one beaut.

Moar pics are welcome.

EDIT: A keeper? As it should be. I'm very happy for you, Stig.

Thank you.

I really can't express how completely different it is than anything I've ever driven. And I say that having experienced pretty much everything from an Integra to a Murcielago.

It is just a completely separate solution to the question of driving.

Wow! That is awesome. Congrats man. She's a beauty. Take it easy on the launch control. I hear it voids the warranty. Enjoy in good health.

Love it!

I'm convinced my next "fun car" will be something like this or an E30 M3... but this is more enticing. I just can't get excited about anything new that's even remotely reasonably priced, so mid/late '80s 911 it is

YES! Mad jelly and what a raw experience that car brings.

Dear Andres G...that's how you show people what is in the trailer.

*Bombproof, possibly, huge pothole shatters the rim, pops airbags; brick wall adjusts camber, makes bumper slightly less aerodynamic; both temperature sensors can be removed by a)sliding sideways through the yard b) 50mph through a chicken farm; oil can be changed every 25k miles+/- with no real adverse reactions; brake sensor light is a suggestion- it has been on for almost 2 years; coolant never ever ever has to be changed. Like I said, bombproof. -Palmer

Hah, definitely not something it will be subjected to. When it gets above 4000rpm though, it simply hauls to redline. And the sounds...

E30 is excellent, but it does drive in a very similar fashion to the E36 and E46. This is just a completely separate experience.

Oddly, I think the 911 might be cheaper to own. E30 M3s tend to need engine rebuilds every 100k while the 3.2 Carrera is closer to 300k depending on ownership habits.
