Default What do you call high mileage?

Hey guys, so my 98' Techno/Dove coupe I just rolled 192,000 today. Starting to realize that I will be in the 200k club soon, dont know if I like that My car will now give me blowback smoke sometimes. I thought it was the ccv and or hoses, so I went ahead and replaced that. Have no oil in my manifold or on the throttle body, they are both clean as a whistle. Still getting smoke. This car was cared for all its life and has been in a garage. Most of the miles are highway.

I'm just starting to realize the S52 is getting tired. But these engines have gone way past my mileage. I feel like im at half-life. Do you guys with high mileage M3's get any smoke or have any other issues relating to engine internals?

What do you consider high mileage? Where the engine internals (piston rings, valve seals, rod bearings, timing guides, ect. ect.) are probably towards the end of their existence.

Would you go with a rebuild or a swap?

I will drive this motor till it's last day.
Then I'd swap for a S50B32, or possibly a full rebuild with lowered comp. for FI.

Just trying to get a general "high milage" gathering here.

Cant really comment on when valvetrain components start to wear, but Ive heard plenty of forum members say they are well past 200k on original motors. I have 161k and she still feels fresh in my book, these are some well built motors.

Seriously? Do a compression and leak down test. The bottom end is very robust and usually can go forever if not neglected or abused, the top end is getting tired at 100K or so. You would be surprised at how much a valve job and seals helps.

Mine is at 165k and still in the break-in period. You can really start beating on these cars around 200k.

Once it goes over 200k, the value crashes. It's not worn out, by any means. It's just a BIG number in the eyes of the automotive world.
My Arctic sedan with 187k was the cleanest, best driving one of them all. Brandon got a deal there.

At higher mileage like that I would be worried about the condition of the chassis.

the quote in your sig gives me a laugh. Minimum wage? Pizzeria? German sports car?

I hope its within the head and not the block. I wonder how the S50B32 compares in reliability to our S52

Do you have your contours still by chance?

YES. I trust my car to take me anywhere in the US and back, regardless of the mileage. I don't think i could get more than 6,500 for my car because of the mileage.

ud be surprised at how easy it is. Some of my friends do that and not only are their cars clean, but also heavily modded

I can see it if you are doing 100% of the wrenching and have your car as your only expense. But if you have to pay for the cost of living, theres no way anyone would be driving an ///M to look twice at
