Okay had got the infamous CEL light with a p1189. Did the following
1. Replaced both PreCat O2 sensors 2. Got a new MAF Boot as old one looked like it had small crack 3. Cleaned MAF sensor 4. Checked gas cap... looked good. code went away for 500 miles..... Then got P0446 code (Evaporator Vent Code). Reset it then it went away for 200 miles.... Now the damn P1189 code is back, after I reset that 2 times.. I am about ready to give up. Any ideas ![]() |

Thanks I read that also. I am wondering if there is another way to make sure the MAF doesn't have a leak in an accessory hose. I looked at them all and see nothing. I have never done a smoke test, I have heard of people spraying starter fluid and listening for a increase in engine rev. Other possibility is gas cap is leaking even though that also looks intact. I'm sure other people have fixed this issue. Just can't seem to do it. Was really hoping the 2 new O2 sensors where gonna do it.

It's very Wierd the car drives fine and I reset the light and it has been off for 100 miles. Also wondering if it may be the fuel filter? But shouldn't that affect performance and rpms?

Pretty sure that its a leak from the maf system or hoses. Anyone know how to find a small leak? Already checked the hoses. Was wondering if there is a common weak point besides the maf boot I replaced or if there is a way to do a DIY smoke test?

Do you have any mods? I bought a vac leak tester which consisted of a silicone hose, cap, and a tire air valve on it....I remove the MAF, install this device, use my air compressor to pump air in and listen for leaks....

Just a K&N Filter and Cosmos intake.. had it for years with no problem and also changed the filter when I started to get the code. Where did you get this kit from... Was actually thinking of using a cigar to check for leaks like I saw on a video

I would check the emissions lines. Manifold metal lines to hose to valve to intake. Also hose from intake manifold to fuel tank. Maybe there are diagrams in Bentley or on realoem. There is likely some sort of air leak resulting in a lean or rich mixture beyond what the 02s can compensate for. Could be a split idle air valve hose or a split crankcase vent to intake manifold hose. Some splits open only under higher vacuum levels.

Just google Vac leak tester and you'll eventually find it....or I'm sure it would be pretty cheap to make your own.
