OK, maybe this is a better picture of the BM53
![]() I think the pin numbers are on the block that connects to the radio, but this picture gives the pin numbers. The 2nd picture shows the 3 possible connection options of the Aux kit. The resistors and capacitor are included in the OEM kit, it's how the radio knows the Aux is connected, but you can make it up yourself for a just a few $. If your car was pre-wired for Aux you would use the last of the 3 pictures, C1, using pins 1,2 and 3 on the connector behind the monitor. But you car is not pre-wired, so you need to use the middle diagram, B1 which is for flat pin radios. All E46 non Nav radios are round pin, but some 5 series (E39) and X5's (E53) non Nav radios have flat pins. So the only 'official' use of B2 is on an E39 or E53 without Nav. If you had the E46 business radio with Aux capability with round pins and not flat, you would use the top picture, A1. |

Success!! I was able to get the Aux to work. It wasn't completely smooth and effortless though. The snag I ran into is that, since my car wasn't pre-wired for Aux, the 3,4 &10 pins on the harness plug were blank. This means that there were no wires for me to tap onto. Luckily, I was able to hack up the steering wheel control harness from my Parrot BT system to have some wires to insert into the 3,4 &10 slots in the plug in order to get it operational. Works flawlessly!
Thank you again for your help guys!

Glad you didn't have to source out a new unit! Not sure if you know this or not, but you can use the 1-6 buttons on the Nav headunit to increase pre-amp output if you are finding your music to sound too quiet. I've been playing around with mine, and I think that since I'm using the line out through my iPhone dock, it sounds best on P1 with the volume turned louder rather than P4-5 but that's just my experience. My system isn't stock. Also, I personally recommend using the line out of whatever audio device you're using since the headphone port usually has some type of pre-amp meant for listening through headphones. I use one of those 2-in-1 iPhone/iPod dock cables so I can charge and listen.

Thanks, Gizmo. I'll have to try the P1-6. Will be mostly using the Aux function to listen to Pandora from my Droid so no line out that I'm aware, stuck using the headphone port.

Oh man, that's a bummer. I just did some quick research and it seems like there is a big demand from Droid users for a line-out option. Oh well, at least you can still use your Droid in your car now!

The BM53 firmware determine whether you have AUX input or not. If you pop open the unit, you will see a removal chip (new models the chip is soldered one, meaning you have aux in, but not necessarily the latest firmware), on this chip you will see a white round sticker with the SA32 on it. If it says FTW underneath it, then you have AUX capabilities.
All bm53 / bm54 units can be upgraded to the latest firmware. Hope that clears up a few things.
