Default Flow's E46 SMG TiAg/Clubsport Alcantara

Hi Everyone!

I'm Florian, from southern France (near Spain). 25 years old.
My love for BMW cars started pretty early as I was still in school. During my second year of engineering school, I got the opportunity to work at the headquarters of BMW in Munich. I went through the lab where they test the interiors for smell (when you park your car in the sun), fire, cleaning, and so on.. Then I went the the engine assembly line where they did the V8 for the 7 series and some 5 series. Pretty cool how everything is automatic there. After 4 weeks I changed to go to the R&D department, where I got to see some pretty cool things, but that was a while ago. Finally, I finished my internship by staying two months in the Motorsport department where they built and maintained the two litter race engines. While there I got to sit down in a M3 GTR for instance, pretty cool!

I have always been a motorbike fan, and have owned a couple. I started with an Aprilia RS125 (125cc, 2 stroke engine, 34bhp). It was one of the best things I have ever owned. It got me wherever I wanted, and was pretty quick. Here is a quick picture :

I don't have much of a car history. When I turned 18 (you need to be 18 in France to get your driver's licence) my parents offered me a Renault Megane 1.9 dCi (1.9L diesel engine, ~110bhp, 6MT), which was great for a couple of years since it needed only little fuel and insurance wasn't bad at all.
Here is a quick pick of that "monster" :

Later on, I got another Renault Megane Diesel, but this time around a 150 bhp engine, 6MT. I kept this one for about 4 years, and it was a great car, very well equipped. But quality of the trim was not that great, and after some time, rattles would appear, noises, and so on..
Here are a couple of pictures that I took to sell that car, about 6 months ago :

This car was my daily driver, it got a great fuel mileage (about 35 miles to the gallon), maintaining it was not expensive, and the tires didn't wear too quick.

Ok, now to the actual fact : the BMW M3!
When I was 23 I started to work and had nice incomes. In fact, it was so unexpected that everything changed a little too fast. I suddenly could afford my all time dream : the BMW E46 M3.
I made up my mind so quick that I now regret it. I just went online, took an interesting proposition, called the guy and bought the car. I didn't even look at all the options I had regarding color, interiors,... The car had very few miles on it, 27 500 to be precise. This was on March 6th, 2010.
Options were :
- SMG2 Gearbox
- TiAg color (354)
- M Clubsport Alcantara (F2AT)
- Alarm
- Sunroof
- Velour carpets
- Lumbar width ajustement
- Bi-Xenon
- TV
- 16/9 GPS
- Bluetooth
- 6 CD changer in the trunk
- Harman / Kardon

When I looked at it, in an underground garage, it looked absolutely perfect, and test-driving it was just an awesome experience. Later on, I discovered
- Scratched rims
- The paint was chipped as hell (someone said to me it looks like the car got shot with a shotgun!)
The engine is very healthy tho, and I am very happy about that.
I have done my homework and found out that the previous owner actually bought it from BMW in Munich, who used it as a company vehicle. Not sure that's too good.

Bottom line : when you buy a car, take your time, read the forums, look at all your options, and then buy the one you really have no doubt about! From now on, believe me, I'll do it like that.

Here are a couple of pictures of when I brought it back home and washed it. Sorry about the quality, took all that with my phone. I am not too good at taking pictures, but I'll try to get better and use my better camera.

Once I got that car, my project was to make it look brand new, only with OEM equipment. First, was a serious Inspection II, where we changed all the fluids, and did everything we could to prevent wearing of the engine / components around it.
Then, we did :
- New paint of most of the car
- New front light lenses
- New grills
- OEM 19 wheels (I got them for a steal, but it turned out they were leaking air and were poorly reconditioned)
- E36 3,62 diff (which has a stronger limited slip differential than the E46, but I wish I would have gone with the 4,10 since I have an SMG)

Here are a couple of pictures of that :

All the work in now done at Delage, which I am sure some of you heard of (Carbon airbox for instance).

Since then, car now has following :
- //M Track activation (thanks to the DIY in this forum)
- Smoked depo corners
- Armrest retrofit
- Driver's side leather restoration (turned out it made the nice Nappa leather shiny.. lets see how I can sort that out)
- Front BMW Performance BBK (gone, it never worked like I would like it to, so I now have the ZCP brakes)
- OEM ZCP Wheels (8 front, 9,5 rear)
Here are a couple of pictures :

Ok, so, now to the real journal. Here is the whole list of what I have planned for this car :
- Quad headlights
- Leatherique leather cleaning
- CSL diffusor
- CSL Bootlid
- Alcantara steering wheel + hand-brake boot
- KW V3 coilovers
- Evolve tune
- Black vinyl on roof
- Anti UV glass treatment

In the future I also plan to do :
- CSL Airbox
- 4.10 diff
- Z4M steering rack
- Supersprint V2 stepped headers
- AP Racing BBK
- Subframe reinforcement
- CSL CF roof

I have no timeline for all of these mods since I now have some other priorities and I need to see how all that economy context works out for Europe. Not looking too good for the moment.

I plan to keep this car for long. It might not be state-of-the-art today, but the I6 NA is just what I am in love with. The sound that it makes, even stock, just makes me smile each single time I hit the gas pedal between buildings, when the windows are open.

I'll keep this journal updated. Might not be the same pace as others can have, but I'll do my best to take some good pictures and try to tackle some DIYs myself.

Haha.. I know! I just wrote all that offline and then I wanted to upload everything at once.
Being in a hotel room right now, internet got really slow, and I just had my "reserved" posts
Nevermind, it's now fixed! I'm sure it didn't take you too long to read it :-)

I can't wait to see where you go with this car, you have great plans.

Like you I also plan on keeping my E46 for a long time to come.

Thank you. The E46 is def my favorite BMW up to today, with maybe the E30 M3.

Things are getting more precise.
What has been ordered and has yet to arrive :
- Quad headlights - ETA 10 days
- CSL center console - ETA 5 days
- CSL diffuser - ETA 5 days
- CSL CF roof - ETA 5 days

What has been received :
- CSL Trunk

I plan on doing the quad headlights first with a full review / pictures.
Then, I will do the whole CSL parts mounting right before the summer. Buying all that was a lot of money and I need to be a little careful now :-)

I plan on doing the "before" pictures of my headlight tonight, and might be posting them tomorrow or after I did the quad headlights install.

I'll do some better pictures of my car at the same time so everyone can see in what state it is right now.

Modding is a lot of $!
