Default USA 3.2 M3 - questions

I was wondering as the uk later e36's were designated Evo's

does the US 3.2 litre E36 M3's have :-

-3.2 litre engine
-6spd box
-double vanos
-floating discs

is the USA M3 3.2litre version also considered an EVO ? and did it have a power increase over the normal 3 litre usa M3 ?

this guy i no from america is in my science class. HE said he bought his M3 brand new from a BMW dealer, he also said his M3 was an evo and had a 6spd and the same 321 bhp as my car, i was thinking BULLSH!T. I didnt say anything to the guy because hes one of them people that thinks they r always right, i cant stand the bastRD.

he only mentioned all this about owning a evo when he saw me getting in2 my car @ collage. The cheeky fukka even asked for a test drive "just to make sure that my car wasn't a fake!"

cheers for your help

The 1996 and op M3's were not evos. The engine was designated S52US and was a 3.2 liter I6 putting out the same hp/tq numbers as the S50US (240/238 I believe). The difference was the torque became available sooner in the rev range.

They all came with 5 speed gearboxes; no 6 speeds until the E46.

No double vanos.

No floating rotors.

The US is considered an EVO (according to my "Original BMW M-Series" book by James Taylor). Here are the marked differences between your EVO and ours:

Differences:
1. No double VANOS.
2. NO 6-Speed tranny.
3. No floating discs.

Simularities:
1. 3.2L displacement.

Other US EVO Changes
1. Upgrade in horsepower (Unlike your EVO with 321hp, the US EVO -namely the cars with the 3.2L engine- had a power increase to 243, an increase of 3hp, Taylor, 122-124). Torque also went up to 236lb ft. an increase of 11lb. ft. (Taylor, 122-124).
2. Final gear ratio switched to 3.23:1 (Taylor, 124).
3. A host of about five or six different options either become standardized or deleted.

I would say that your US friend is very wrong.

Check out the Taylor book, it is a wealth of knowledge.

Correct in a sense... BMW dealers called them "Evos" but the factory never did.

I think that the factory called the E30 evolution models EVO (like the Sport EVO for example).

I think the term EVO just comes from the fact that the car is an evolution of the first production model run.

My BMW book states BMW M3 EVOLUTION ??

I thought BMW did consider it an Evolution, from the evolution 1, 2 and 3 from the E30 series.

thoughts?
