As a recent purchaser of an M3 I would really enjoy getting my car on a track when the weather warms up in a couple of months. I would like to take full advantage of all the M has to offer. How does one go about finding information on track days and times and is there anything that needs to be done to get on a track.

Join BMWCCA and participate in HPDEs with your local chapter. Close to you - I do events with the NJ and GV chapters and they are both good clubs. NJMP is probably the closest track to you. You may want to do that a few times before you take on Watkins Glen.
http://www.njbmwcca.org/event_info/driver_school.php http://www.gvc-bmwcca.org/ http://www.delvalbmwcca.org/schools.php The sponsoring club will tell you what you need to do to participate in their HPDEs. Check their websites for a good documents on what to bring and what you need to do. Do NOT mod you car. The minimums are a pre-track inspection (find a good indy shop and use them all the time), a helmet, a torque wrench and an air pressure gauge. Most other things can be borrowed there. Leave your ego at home and be eager to listen and learn. You'll have a great time.

Hopefully I won't get in trouble for cross-posting, but www.motorsportreg.com is a site exclusively to provide a calendar for automotive events. I think it has auto-x, HPDE, cruise/caravans, etc. etc. etc. You can search by date and distance from a location.

There are many organizations, on top of BMWCCA also look into NASA, Trackdaze, Chin Motorsports, PCA (no, you don't have to own a porsche), etc
