But yes, if you ask DMV what color is the car based on the given VIN, they won't be able to tell.
And yes, VIN has nothing to do with color code.
I did not disagree with you on that.

OP, easiest way to spot the difference is, inspect the color under the sun.
Carbon Black - under the sun, it's navy. After sunset, it's black.
Jet Black - under the sun, it's still black.

Strut tower drivers side has the color and color code. If you want to know the original color, that's where you will find it.
