Default Bmw recall of n54 equipped cars

Sorry to be posting this on an M3 site, but I thought it might be germane to us considering the next gen M3 will be powered by some form of a turbo engine. ABC News (http://abcnews.go.com/TheLaw/bmw-adm...ry?id=11968495) did an investigative story on this issue and how BMW "quietly" tried to cover-up the issue by having owners sign what amounted to a "gag order" to avoid bad publicity. Can anyone here shed more light on this? I am now seriously considering placing an order for a 2012 E92 rather than waiting for the F30 M3.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

BMW to Conduct Voluntary Emissions and Safety Recalls

· Emissions recall affects models equipped with twin-turbo inline
six-cylinder engines
· Safety recall affects X5 Sports Activity Vehicles equipped with inline
six-cylinder engines

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – October 26, 2010... BMW of North America has notified the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of its intent to conduct a voluntary recall of some model year 2007-2010 BMWs equipped with twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engines, all of which feature BMW’s High Precision Injection direct fuel injection system. It has also asked for approval from the California Air Resources Board to conduct this action. Affected vehicles may experience a failure of the high-pressure fuel pump.
Symptoms include long-crank engine starting times along with the illumination of the “Service Engine Soon” light. In certain cases, the driver may experience reduced engine performance in a Safe Mode accompanied by a tone and the illumination of the “Engine Malfunction” light.

Based on the individual service history of the vehicle, the action will entail replacement of the high-pressure fuel pump and/or a software update.
Approximately 130,000 vehicles are potentially affected with about 40,000 expected to require a new high pressure fuel pump.
Affected BMW models include:
· MY 2007–2010 335i models.
· MY 2008–2010 135i, 535i and X6 xDrive35i Sports Activity Coupes
· MY 2009 – 2010 Z4 Roadster sDrive35i
In a separate action, BMW has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that it will voluntarily recall approximately 20,800 MY 2008 X5 Sports Activity Vehicles equipped with normally-aspirated inline six-cylinder engines to replace the low-pressure fuel pump. In this case, should the fuel pump experience a failure, the engine will stop running and the driver will lose power assist for the steering and brakes although both the steering and the brakes remain operational.
Letters will be sent by First Class mail to owners of affected vehicles in the coming weeks, requesting the scheduling of a service appointment with an Authorized BMW Center to have the update performed.
No injuries have been reported with either of these issues.
In the case of either issue, if the customer experiences a problem, they should contact their authorized BMW Center. Customers with additional questions should contact BMW Customer Relations at 1-800-563-4269 or email CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.

the quotes from the BMW folks really make them seem pretty slimy...which is not surprising. they are car salesmen, after all.

Nothing new here. This is just BMW's same old N54 HPFP "fix" with a brand new marketing/media spin. In January 2010, BMW released SIB130309 that says pretty much the same thing as today's press release (see attached pdf).

The new single turbo N55 engine in the 2011 335i is already having the same HPFP problems too.

It's disheartening that BMW engineers have been unable to fix this problem in over 5 years of N54/N55 production. It also makes me very leery of buying a FI/DI BMW engine in the future.

This one's another, BMW announces recall over potential fire hazard! More than 32,000 vehicles have been integrated in a BMW recall, in which a component could pose a fire danger. The situation, exclusively contained to certain models made between 2008 and 2011, is with a part that can smolder and burn in automobiles with either 8 or 12-cylinder turbocharged engines. :3 hopefully they will take care of the issue quickly.

This is investigative journalism at it's best! Cheers to ABC. Forcing BMW to take action when they never had the any intention of making things right. Wish this would happen more often.

I traded my 2010 335i after 2 fuel pumps, a set of injectors (the newest problem), and several software updates.

why did you trade it?

with 2 fuel pumps, that's 2 safety issues

qualifiers for a surrender...

Yes and I am sure they would have smiled and taken it back. Not worth the hassle.
