Wife bought me a "Hamann" front spoiler for Xmas and was a little lazy and didn't get around to installing it until today.
Didn't get any hardware with the spoiler (it was ordered from Modbargains but shipped direct from Taiwan) and so I had to get creative and used rivet nuts (nutserts) to mount the lip. Since the rivet nuts work nicely in blind holes I didn't want extra holes on the bottom surface of the spoiler to collect dirt, etc. I laid out the bumper on the lip to figure out where to put the mounting holes. I used a 1/8" drill to make some pilot holes through the bumper and lip spoiler. 1. Drill hole for rivet nut - Drill only in the top surface and don't drill completely through. ![]() 2. Install rivet nut/nutsert ![]() 2.a (repeat 1 & 2) ![]() 3. Screw onto bumper ![]() 4. Pause to admire your work ![]() 5. Install bumper back on M3 and admire your work some more ![]() more pics: http://adrianteo.com/images/M3-lip/index.html -AT |

Looks great! Having that front spoiler on a lowered car really makes negotiating steep angled drives and entrances a real challenge. Last week, I literally tore the one off the front of my car, and worse yet, it was a real Hamann I bought used in primo shape! I liked the look so much, I saw Jo @ Euro Dyne and bought their version of the front spoiler. So the lesson from this, be careful and drive in at an angle. Cheers.

Hey guys,
I'm a new member here so I can't PM yet, so does anybody know Function7 the OP? I'd really like to know where he got those rivet nuts, what size they are, and a few other questions. Where I can order them, any specialty tools required, etc. ?? Thanks in advance! |

He replied to me a while ago, M6 x 1. You just want to find a nutsert tool and then whatever nutserts/fasteners.
I went with this one: It's expensive compared to what's out there in SAE. You can get a kit comparable for much less in SAE sizes with a ton of nutserts included. I wanted to keep my car metric. I have not installed my Hamann lip as I am still debating it now that the rest of my car is dialed in more. |

Quote:
Car was stock height and the lip did lower the front bumper overhang by about 1.25". It survived without a scratch about a year before the wife borrowed the car, drove it to have coffee with her friends, and then drove home like nothing had happened. She had rammed the lip into the curb while parking and broke it right down the middle, and ripped the mounting holes in the bumper cover too. Had to replace the plastic bumper cover yet again (bumper #2 - yes, painted it myself again) RIP "hamann" front lip. -A P.S. you don't really need a nutsert tool. You can easily rig one up with a nice steel plate with a hole in it (what I used above is a steel parallel off our manufacturing shop). Last edited by Function7; Thu, May-17-2012 at 05:33:43 AM. |
