Default Broken Stereo Volume Knob

Looking for some advice. On my 2003 M3, the volume and on/off switch is broken. Volume part works but it's near impossible to turn on & off.

Any suggestions on whether a repair is an option?

Same on my business unit, but I think it's the knob. If you pull the knob off, can you turn it off?

Edit: Just searched for the business unit on RealOEM and found the part number for the volume knob. Might be worth checking as it's only an $8 part at Tischer:

I have the same problem. It is not the knob that is broken, but the actual piece in the stereo which holds the knob.

I have just learned to live with it and turn the volume all the way down instead of trying to turn it off. I know it sounds lame but i don't want to but a whole new stereo

Default Same thing happened to me, got it fixed for $45

Hey there,
Same issue about 6 months ago...the volume/power knob broke off of it's solder points inside the radio. Took it to a private car/radio repair shop, and the owner was able to pull the stereo, open it, resolder the knob back into position, and replace the head unit within 25minutes. He's in San Antonio, TX, though.
Good luck!

had the same issue on my '04 during the warranty period.

took it to the dealer and they just replaced the whole unit, said an internal piece was broken. you can try opening it or take it to a stereo shop as suggested.

I have a different problem w/ my volume knob. I can turn it on/off, but when i spin the dial, it will be non-responsive or do weird things like lower the volume when I spin it the direction to go higher, jump up the volume by a lot, etc. any idea what my problem is?

All volume knobs are potentiometers (variable resistors). Most equipment nowadays employs the digital potentiometer, vs the old school analog potentiometer. It sounds like the linearity of your discrete potentiometer is poor, thus producing the erratic behavior of your volume. Old school analog potentiometers are much more reliable.
