Exclamation Castrol TWS Motorsport Vs Castrol RS Oil

Hey Guys

OK i know for a fact that only 10w 60 Castrol TWS Motorsport oil should be used in M3,M5, M5, Z4M etc, i.e all M cars. Now people and independent shop owners in Bahrain and Saudi (inc BMW in Saudi) keep insisting that CASTROL RS 10w60 is the same as TWS 10w 60. I went to Saudi yesterday to try and get some TWS M oil and they said they use the RS for all M cars for the last 3 years approx!!!!! I had a long argument with the guys there and in the end they admitted defeat and could not show me any documentation from BMW recommending RS oil for the M cars.

Im Glad that at least BMW BAHRAIN have the TWS Motorsport oil and are using that instead of the RS.

I have read people saying that the RS is the same as the TWS but different market name. Someone please clarify this issue for me and others here as well. I am really getting confused and angry cos now a lot of people i know are using CASTROL RS oil in their Ms and this is really worrying if the engine was designed for Castrol TWS. Any input would be very helpful guys! Thanks.

they are not the same oil
however, both are approved to be used in the m3
bmw recommends castrol tws, but rs (cheaper) can also be used
in fact it says somewhere on the air intake i believe that either tws or rs can be used.
in some countries tws is not available and the closest is the rs
typically they are made for different markets.
i know tws is for US and Europe, but i know for a fact that some countries only get the rs for the ///m vehicles
many people who used both reported oil operating temperature differences.
with tws most people reported a consistent oil temp of 100 degrees C whereas with the rs they reported lesser temps (roughly 90)
it's often debated what operating temp is best, but it's important to note that lower operating temp is not always better.

Thank you for that! In Bahrain it gets pretty hot and like last friday at the F1 circuit track temps were up to 50c!!!! So if the RS is good enough for the heat i wouldnt mind using it! More inputs please from more of our members would be great Thank you all so much.

I will call BMW Middle-East tomorrow and ask the technical section (if they have one) and then we will see what they have to say.

Also remember that E46M3's originally ran 5w30 for the first year and a half or so. It wasn't until the rod bearing failures that BMW changed their stance and said we have to run 10w60.
