Interesting....

I know that some retrofits will work without coding, but I know that it may not be full featured.

Like do you have voice recognition?

If someone calls do you get caller ID to show on the NAV or Business CD?

I replaced my TCU with a ULF, and the TCU is hardcoded in the Vehicle Coding order which prevents some items from being coded via a GT-1 unless you reinstall the TCU.

i guess all i really cared for was factory bluetooth with crystal clear reception and that's exactly what i got
don't know if it has voice recognition.. how do i check?
what really makes this thread important is that until now people who installed bluetooth TCUs already had assist or an existing tcu....... i had neither
so the thread reaffirms that as long as the car is prewired for phone, then the newest bluetooth tcu will work without activation
the car had no tcu and no assist and no mic and no bluetooth module
until now i believed that (1) integrating bluetooth may turn out to be very difficult and (2) that it will for sure require dealer activation
i'm so fuking happy!

go for it man
chances are that you already have a tcu with no bluetooth if your car is 04+
in which case everything would run you $322.92 out the door (due to $50 core return)
actually even less than that because you wouldn't need the tcu bracket

If you press the talking man button on the steering wheel the TCU should beep and you should be able to say a command. Try it and if it beeps, say "Help". You can go from there.

There is a voice command list pdf file posted on the net somewhere, with a search you can probably find it. The acronym for BMW voice commands is SES (TCU mit SES ).

If you don't get the dealer activation, voice command does not work. I tried

Ah hah! Well that's an interesting twist. My car doesn't have a voice activation button (ZCP: no steering wheel controls), so I can't even try voice activation/control.

i just tried a moment ago
i don't think voice command works with my new tcu unit
but in all honestly i really don't care
as much as some people like voice commands, i'm a 'push-a-button' type of guy
even if voice commands worked, i wouldn't be using them
i feel stupid saying commands out loud in front of others and i know that i wouldn't be using them since for example my last 3 cell phones all had voice dailing and i never ever used it.
don't get me wrong i can understand why some people may like it... but i never did
and it's not that i don't know how to... i tried it and didn't like it
just venting here cause i'm really happy with the unit
the only thing i was after was crystal clear static-free reception and that's what i get with this new unit
i spoke to a number of people and they all said that they can hear me very clearly
in fact my gf didn't even know that i was talking to her through the car's bluetooth while i was driving yesterday

Good to know... I did not mean to rain on your parade in anyway. If you're happy we're happy

Just as some more information, when you add voice commands, it's not just for the phone it's for the car as well. So if you have navigation you can speak POIs and give it various other non-phone related commands.

Anyway, I do wonder what/if there are any other differences by not getting it activated by a dealer. I know that when I retrofitted Nav in an '01 M3 that I had and did not get it activated the Nav countdown would not occur on my instrument cluster only in the Nav unit itself. Other than the unit worked flawlessly..

Do you get all the Caller ID info on the radio?
