Default For you M-coupe guys - racer!

Thought you all might be interested in seeing this, if you haven't already. Makes me wish I had gotten an M-Coupe.

So far as I know, it's the only one being raced in North America. Grand-Am Koni Challenge. I know the team owner and have gone to several races this year with them. It's damn fast - would have had an easy top 5, possibly top 3 in the last race at Watkins if it weren't for about an hour and a half of yellow flag laps and some stupid errors we made on the pit stop side of things.
Sites to check out:
www.motorsporttechnologygroup.com
www.grand-am.com/koni
www.morrisanimalfoundation.org/meisha

The cause is a great one. I'll not take the time to explain the paw prints and dog bones - you can read all about what has already been written on the above websites. Get involved if you feel compelled!!! My wife and I are both vets, specialists in fact, and my wife treated his dog. In fact, and you all might appreciate this, since he bulit this car new this year, he named in Megen, which happen ot be my wife's name!!! Way cool.

I can tell you some about the car, but not all - secrets you know. But seriously, if you are interested about some of the build on it, let me know.

I saw one of the 1st races of this car on Speed a few months ago. Unfortunayely it had taken some damage to the front end (looked like it had been poked in the eye). I know in a later race they did finish well. Glad to see the coupe in competition stateside.
Good luck to them.

You saw THE first race of this car - ever! That was the Lime Rock race. The car had had 2 20-30 minute practice sessions before that race. It ran as high as 6th and would have finished 6th easliy if we hadn't had to bring it in for gas - they just hadn't had time to deal with that issue before the race.

The second race was at Mosport outside of Toronto - placed 3rd there, and ran strongly in 1st for 16-20 laps or so.

Thanks for the comments. Check the schedule at the Grand Am site - maybe you could come to a race and see her run in person - you wouldn't regret it.

Take it easy!

Need to teach those Speed channel announcers that it's a BMW M Coupe not a Z4 Roadster!!

Yup, good call. Basically, everybody in the series is generally clueless about the car as evidenced by the dummy announcers at the Barber race.

You all might be interested to know that the car ran about the last 50-70% of the race with little to no rear brake. Been having trouble getting a rear pad that doesn't act unpredictably. They had to try a new pad down there and it ended up getting burned off the car much sooner than expected. I didn't get to the Barber race personally, but I'm told that it was shooting sparks from the rear brakes by the end of the race because the pads were gone.

Car is not going to be a Iowa - plans are for some major work on it. Most of the issues relate to getting up and out of the corners well - bugger is kind of squirrelly between getting off the brakes and back onto the gas. Apex to exit is the area that needs work.

Since you all are M-coupe owners, I just figured a little insight to stuff like this (with out getting into sensitive details) might prove interesting.

Have you guys added more stickers recently? I just picked up the new Bimmer magazine, which has some pictures, but it doesn't looks as covered in there...

The may have published photos from the first race up at Lime Rock. It was at that race that all the stickers were put on the car and it was out for a few practice sessions before the car was covered. It's too bad if those are the photos they have published, because the car has been heavily photographed since then and it is covered. I think at last count there are 215-220 paw print and bone decals on the M-Coupe. About a month ago, he had one of the 997s repainted in the Voodoo Blue that you may have seen on some of the new FJs. The sponsor of that car allowed them to repaint is and cover it with paw prints and bones to help support the cause. I helped the owner put nearly all the decals on the 997 - at last count, and it's hard to count them all - the 997 has about 320 decals on it!!! It's crazy - you have to check out newer pics.

So yeah, the M-coupe is pretty well covered. We didn't put them on it quite as densley as we did on the 997 because we thought more of the M-Coupes paint color needed to show to contrast with the fluoroescent decals.

If you follow the Koni schedule at all, the car won't be at the Iowa race and is questionable for the Three Rivers race at Montreal - they have some rather major work to do on it. Things that have been odentified for a while and had "patch" type fixes to this point and I think now they really want to get some of the issues repaired or fabbed up the right way. The car will definitely be at the VIR race, and will likely be at the Miller race in UT. And I'm pretty sure the Thunderbolt race in NJ is a go too. Will keep you all updated!!

Finally got to watch the race from the New Jersey event. Cool to get to see the coupe running up front and battling Stanton even if the announcers wanted to still call it a roadster. Props to Billy Johnson and company. I still can't believe he didn't win that race, he was sliding that call sideways through that pack of traffic on the last lap.

CRITICAL UPDATE

If you all weren't at the VIR race, you probably haven't heard the bad news because it won't be televised. The car may be totaled - Andrew Davis was at the wheel, had a complete brake failure at the end of the back straight going into the turn 14-16 complex and as a result, the car endoed multiple times and caught fire when it came to a stop. Andrew was able to get out and run away from the car basically unscathed - a true testament to the builders of the car. If you all remember the PTG M3 crash back in what, 2003 I think?, this wasn't that much different. No one from the team witnessed it, but a photographer did get a set of rapid fire frames of the incident, it was pretty bad.

I'll let you know what happens from this point forward, but my fear is that the car is done. Pretty ironic that the car designed to raise awareness of veterinary research and canine hemolytic anemia, that stood for so much this year, ended up this way.
