Default Whirring Sound?

After car has been running and temps up, there seems to be a whirring sound coming from the intake manifold area. Dealer said it was typical but could not tell me what was causing the sound???? Any ideas?

That's a pretty big area.
There's the oil separator under the manifold that has moving parts. The alternator is under the manifold and forward quite a bit. Other than that, there's not a whole lot under there. Can you be more specific?

Anybody that wants a car that idles quietly should stay away from BMW's. There are 5 BMW's in my family (2 e36's, 1 e46, 1 e39, and 1 e53) and they all are anything but dead silent at idle. Now they're not annoyingly loud or anything, but BMW's idle with a certain personality.

Default whirring sound

my first guess would be the alternator(my spelling sucks), if not then check the top pully nearest to the alt......may need some lube. otherwise the clutch fan is known to go bad. make sure its not one of these first. sounds tend to travel and it's not likely to have that sort of sound in your intake unless the manifold itself is cracked!!!
