Default Engine problem, help please!

So I started my car today and there was this really weird sputtering. It had no power and I could barely move for like 3-4 minutes. I had the gas like halfway depressed with barely any response. The service engine soon light came up. After that first few minutes the power seemed to return but it still sputtered a bit. The light then went away.

I haven't had any real problems with anything up until now. Inspection 1 is supposed to come up in about 2.5k miles. The oil is kinda dark, but the inspection is so close, so that would make sense. I don't drive it that hard either.

I'm not close to any dealers and don't have the time right now. Does anyone have any idea what this may be? Is it just the summer gas? Or am I F'ed? I have to make a major drive tomorrow (500 miles) that I cannot get around and I need the M3 for it.

What year is your car. Sounds like it could be the coils. Do a quick search on coils and you will see many have had similar problems.

It is a 2003.5 with only about 22k miles. Will I be able to make the 500 miles? I'll just take it at an easy 60 or so the whole way. This a really bad time for this stuff to happen. Are the coils covered by the engine extended warratny? I'll do a search for that and see what I can find.

Okay, so I'm thinking it maybe the coils. The problem is I'm moving tomorrow and I need to take the M3 down with me and towing is not really an option. Exactly how bad would this be? Will it go totally kaput on me? I drove it around a little just recently and it seemed okay... God I hope everything works out. Knock on wood. I'm graduating tomorrow and have to make the journey back home with all my crap. Then I'm going on an extended vacation to China on Monday and everything is booked so I can't do anything! Oh why to the BMW gods hate me so!

Click the link, I just went through the same thing. It sounds like the coils.
