Well, the same goes with all CSL parts - can not get it. Jon at roadshow tried but the part number got kick back every time he tries to order. He would have only charge me around $85 but no go - plus it is a hazard item and shipping along will cost $50. What to do, what to do??

Well, I been hearing rumor that MINI is secretly using CSL battery and I want to know if it is true. Went to my friendly local MINI superstore and pick up a 05 MINI Cooper battery which has all the right specs. let's do some comparison:

Stock vs CSL battery - courtesy of silver ///M .................................................. ...................................... Stock vs. MINI battery (that MINI wing logo is HOT!)

CSL battery - courtesy of silver///M .................................................. .............................MIN battery - both have identical build, specs and share some parts numbers

Here comes the most important part. Weight difference:

Stock battery: 45.4 lbs ................................ CSL/MINI battery 34.4 lbs

What!? only 10 lbs difference?? I thought US stock battery is 50 lbs?? That was the number i been seeing. Unless Exide change their battery production method and lost some dead weight for stock M3 battery. This is really puzzling. Does this apply only to newer M3 like my 06? The CSL/MINI battery weight is right on the mark at 34.4 lbs

Couple interesting note. The CSL/MINI battery has all the right dimensions as stock except it is not as long. it also has all the right port and holes to fit the red plastic cap shielding the positive terminal and the little black vent pipe on the positive terminal side which connect to a plastic fume vent tube out of the battery compartment

The install was super easy. Just unclip the 2 plastic screw and lift the gray insulation away from the grove on the black battery tray.
Careful not to snap the green fuel filler release

Final fitting comparison: Stock on right and CSL/MINI on left

Driving impression: man the car screams and accelerate like mad!! .... just kidding. By adding the lighter weight battery even out the weight distribution. Now i have 15 lbs off the rear due to lighter battery and CSL muffler and 10 lbs off the front due to lighter CSL headers. There are many light weight battery out there that will reduce even more weight but I was looking for OEM fitting and did not want to sacrifice too much CCA and reserve since this is not a track car .... yet. Man, i got to make an appointment to see Dr. Jekyll about this nasty CSL German measles before it turn into a full blown meningitis ..... or is it too late?

---

wow...good find...

Two quick questions.
1- What year Mini did you ask for? I know that it is probably the same for all of them, but the guys behind the parts counter usually wants a year when buying parts...
2- Does the Mini have the battery also in the back?

That's a lot of pics for a battery replacement (and that's no complaint )

You're making the rest of us look bad with all these details you use, what's the big idea?
