I agree with you in most situations. However, I already have a mint E46 m3 with absolutely 0 rust. I have to be picky when I drive it and make sure I don’t drive in snow, gravel, etc.

I live in Iowa, not California. I will be able to drive this m3 whenever I want, and rack up some miles on it. It will be a nice fun project and restoration. It has some rust but it’s honeslty not that bad. I will post pictures tomorrow.

That's the spirit! There are too many elitists on here, acting like the only E36 M3 worth buying is a pristine one with a 5-digit price tag. To me, the whole point of an E36 M3 is cheap, careless fun. Paying more than $5k for one kinda defeats the purpose in my opinion.

Stoked to see more pics tomorrow!

5k isn't really even enough to catch up on the maintenance on one lol

As someone who has purchased MANY sub $5k E36, I can't begin to tell you how unfounded your opinion is. The maintenance alone on these cars can easily top $10k, DOING THINGS CORRECTLY. The enjoyment of a properly built car will far exceed anything $5k will buy you. Limping along your $5k car defeats the purpose of buying an E36 M3, in my opinion. Don't think for one second that the guys with $20k+ cars don't drive them properly either.

OP, if you're just into a beater E36 you don't have to care about, and compounding the rust issue is on the agenda, then sure... do it. There are some cars out there that just are not worth saving. I'm selling one now, so I know all about it (although zero rust on this one). Rusty cars for rehabilitation are rarely worth it though.

You're entitled to your opinion but you might not be aware that there are indeed people who want nice E36s. not everyone wants to roll around in a total shitbox like Facebook groups would lead you to believe. Because no matter how you slice it, a $5000 E36 M3 in today's market is a shitbox. Doesn't mean you can't fix it with time and more money, but at that point it's no longer a 5K car. Sorry but I don't think that makes me an elitist, but rather just a realist.

i agree with rust being killer and not worth trying to fix. As for this car, for 3K i'd personally buy it and slap some snow tires on it. I'm actually looking for a new DD this year...
