Correct. This is the same light diffusing as E38 and up clusters use. Keep in mind the MPH and Tachometer rest pins secure the orientation of the gauge overlay.

I think these sorts of fixes are so cool; it's literally re-engineering a part using BMW's own methods that the designers of the E36 hadn't thought of yet, but discovered later. Good stuff!

I agree. Obviously there are probably much better methods that could be made, like an LED littered light frame, but this one is free.

I have a spare E46 cluster that is kinda junk and I'm trying to pickup a cheap junk E36 cluster off a forum member. I would like to take all the surface mount LEDs off the E46 cluster and make an ultimate E36 lighting solution.

That looks great. Mine goes completely black except for the way bottom when driving at night for an hour or longer. Seems like something I don't have the patience for though.

Hmmm, I didn't know the E46 cluster use LEDs. That could really be an interesting E36 option.

The "7" on my Euro cluster doesn't like to illuminate very well when it's hot outside.

Someday I'll do this. Or I'll send my cluster to Brett for fixing while I go to Aruba for a week

Awesome write-up.

Or you can fly me to Aruba to fix the cluster there.

Just saying...
