Question PP Sales and tags

For those of you who have done private party sales in the past as a buyer what do you do for tags? Iím looking to get an M3 from out of state and drive it back but the MD MVA has no provision to give me temp tags. The only thing I can think to do is just use the tag on my current car an hopefully not get pulled over on the ride back.

Your state's DMV should be able to issue a temp tag.

You don't want to use your old tag because it is registered to a different car and if an officer runs it as you are driving along and the car doesn't match you are going to have to deal with that headache.

According to the Maryland MVA you need to bring the title to the nearest MVA and have them issue temp tags. Thatís going to be kind of hard since Iíll be in another state. Maybe Iíll get lucky and the seller will let me use their tags and I can mail them back.

when you have the car transferred, have temp tags issued from the state you bought the car in...

when you get home, apply for a title transfer and tags...use the temp tags til you get the new ones

Default PP Sales & Tags......

I live in GA and bought a car through a private party from FL back in Feb 2006 and I put a "Tag Applied For" tag (I actually made this on my computer and then had it laminated) on the back truck license plate area. Since you will have a signed title, bill of sale and valid proof of insurance for the newly purchased M3, even if you get pulled over you will not be cited since you have anywhere from 5-30 days to register the car in your actual state of residence (again the amount of days allowed varies by state).

I have gone through this process in other states where they also did not issue temp tags, but you don't want to use another plate on the car since that is registered to another vehicle and that is illegal.

Let me know if you have any questions and hopefully this helps.

That sounds like a good idea if there isn't an MVA close by.The seller has a local coming to see it tonight so I hope it will still be for sale. Either way I need to know all of this stuff regardless.

Thanks.

If anyone has any tips for buying P2P please feel free to chime in.

Give the seller a large deposit for his tags and Fed ex them back. You will be insured under his insurance and your own policy coverage and be legal at the same time. He can rip up the check when you return the plates and report no accidents. Additionally he can cancel his insurance at 12:00 midnight the day of the purchase. Technically the same coverage as borrowing your neighbors car.
