Mine has been on for months. I had to replace the SMG relay last fall because the car would not start. Ever since then I have had the SMG light. I have not disonnected the battery for an extended period of time, so maybee that will fix it. The battery has been dead in it for weeks at a time so I dont know if there is even a difference in having a dead battery or completly disconnecting it.

Good luck, I hope someone knows the way to make the light go away.

I read a thread on here where someone said that it may be necessary to replace the battery,
as our cars are fairly sensitive to voltage issues...something about a cell in the battery being
dead. You can have Autozone (for guys in the USA) check your battery out

when i bought mine used last year it showed up with a dead battery...replaced that but apparently the bad battery caused enough stress on the alternator so that failed the next week, and my SMG light also came on at that point. It reset itself once i replaced the alternator. Read other threads and you will find that the SMG is particularly susceptible to voltage irregulariates which can be caused by bad battery, alternator, or other electrical anomalies such as the voltage regulator which has also been known to be problematic, which is a much cheaper item to replace than the alternator itself so make sure you know which one (if any) is bad.

interesting enough, my battery flatlined yesterday just when i'm about to take my M3 'vert out to enjoy the nice weather. after jumpstarting the engine, the SMG indicator lit up and remained lit while i was driving. the M is heading to the dealer this week to have the battery replaced...hopefully its not the alternator.
