Default Just test drove a 1999 996

Hi, Tell me, just drove a 1999 never winter driven beautiful 911 Porsche with 60k miles. It just felt slow, heavy in the direction changes, and brakes were not as strong, though they may not have been worked up properly lately. On the plus side the car is so much more relaxing to drive. The M3 is electrifying while the porsche just felt sedate like a gentleman's sports car. Anyhow, was looking to add another car to the garage and was watching the cheaper 911 for some time. Now I'm out of the 911 and sill looking for an e92 (four door with dual clutch) as my next fun to sit along side the e46 m3.

oh yeah, the question, am I the only one who thinks this?

E90 is an awesome car and quite a bit different than a 911.

Be sure to check out a 997 C2S as well before you make your decision.

I imagine the 997 2cS, with S being the magical letter. I think they are a little out of my price range, while the e90 is an easy sell to my wife , even if the price difference isn't that great.

$ aside I'd much rather have an e92 m3 over any 996 to be honest. I'm sure the 996 gt3 is fun but god are they ugly (imo). Wouldn't consider any standard 996 models. Even the standard 997 was slow when I drove one (forgot which model).

Yes exactly, I've had a passenger seat in a 996 4s, perhaps 2004 and it had some grunt, but the sound of the m3 just kills nonetheless. I've always wanted a 911, but the e46 m3 is a very special car (so it makes otherwise great cars not quite seem as great as they may otherwise be). I also don't want the garage filled with bmws, or audis, I like to have something else, but not the 996 (babbling this was my intent, but the e90 will do fine, though I've never test driven one, yet).

Make sure you test drive one first. I was a bit disappointed when I was considering an e92. I didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much as the e46. It is a fast car though and great for a daily so just suggesting you test drive one first.

My opinion is exactly opposite of yours
Drove a 996 w row suspension and it made the e46 feel very pedestrian

would never trade a e46 m3 for a 996 unless gt version based on looks alone.

I completely agree. It's been a long time since I drove a 996.1 with a 3.4, but I've within the last year driven a 996.2, C4S, and a Turbo. None of them were boring whatsoever.

To those who think the 996 is "ugly", do you dislike the refreshed Turbo headlights? The early lights shared with the Boxster are definitely not good looking, but I don't think the 2002+ (2001 for Turbo) look bad at all. Sure, they aren't round like every other 911, but that's ok because you get all of the enjoyment from the drivers seat where you never see the lights.

+1. The S54 is more special/exciting than a lot of the base 911 engines (though they are still good, when they're not blowing up) but the 911 itself is a more focused sports car and it shows. I do like the front engine balance of the M3 though, its more playful.

I don't mind the 996 headlights so much, especially on the front end of the turbo, but the overall roundness of the 996 is kinda unattractive to me at times. It looks like a torpedo. 996 vert from the side looks the worst, 996 GT3 looks best. Something about both the 997 and 993 is just better proportioned imo
