Default 2002 e46 m3 post vanos rebuild hesitation at warm start up with video!

Hey guys!
So quick history:
it's a 2002 m3
Almost at 90k miles
Car is manual
Drives with no problem like it should.

So about a month ago I had a knocking sound coming from my vanos which was resolved 2 days ago by rebuilding the vanos (consisted of besian anti rattle kit with rebuild kit and oil pump disk and all new seals) at a BMW shop near by. I picked up the car 2 days ago and right when I started it, the car hesitated to start. I drove the car and it drove just fine. Next morning I go out and crank it and it cranks but doesn't start, second try it fired right up. Now this happens randomly where sometimes it hesitates and sometimes it fired right up. The shop says it needs time to get used to all the new parts but to me that sounds like b.s.

Oh and a side note I told the shop to change my oil and they over filled it by a quart and half. They drove it over 100miles with the over filled oil in it. Do u think that has anything to do with it ? I really appreciate ur guys help and I hope we can figure this out!

The shop you took it to did the vanos, overfilled the oil and told you car needs to get used to it but they drove it a 100 miles. Sounds like the shop messed up your vanos rebuild and oil change.

Well they didnt really mess up my vanos, that part got fixed. My car was making a loud knocking noise from the engine, it sounded like a diesel but that got fixed. now it takes two cranks for it to start. I really dont know if the shop caused it or it was just coincidence. I wanna know could this be caused because of the vanos?

You said you picked it up and right away it had a hesitation problem they did a fair amount of work on it. What are the odds it's a coincidence?

FWIW, when I was swapping my new(er) S54 in last year, I just did the Beisan Seals (should've done the whole anti rattle fix) and I felt like it took a couple weeks for the vanos seals to break in. I had some vanos rattle for a few weeks and it gradually went away. My theory is the new O-rings we're seating in. Hope your noise goes away, double check your cam bolts and rod bearings if you haven't already!

Yes, that's what I'm thinking. Also I did have the cam bolts changed since they were all loose. I called the shop back and he said to bring it in next week and he will recheck all the work. I really hope it just goes away on its own and I don't have to mess with it anymore. The car was sitting for over a month not being driven so I really miss it haha. We will see.

I will be honest to say that any shop who is careful and is familiar with working on BMW cars, nonetheless an M car should know enough that the car takes 6.9 Quarts of motor oil specifically made for the car. The fact in itself alone that they overfilled your engine by 1.5 quarts says they are idiots (excuse my French).

A healthy BMW engine with no issues should have absolutely no hesitation when starting up warm, cold, hot, semi-warm, semi-cold, sitting for a day, sitting for an hour or even sitting for months or years.

It sounds like something may be wrong.

Any internal work on this car is one I would absolutely never cheap out on.

GL buddy...

Yes sorry for the confusion but yes I'm having the hesitation with the car starting after I got the vanos rebuilt which the sound is gone now.
