Default Dylanís Track Rat Build

I should have started this a long time ago but Iíve been caught up with maintenance and track days. Anyway here we go, enjoy!

I picked the car up locally (in AZ) in January completely stock with 175xxx miles. 2002 e46 M3, SMG, Tiag on Black. The miles scared me a little but the car was in such good condition I felt confident I was getting a clean example of a high mileage e46/s54. Car also had receipts of about $7k is recent maintenance.

The evening I picked her up along with pics of major maintenance.

Literally days later I took the car to our Time Attack dyno day to get classed for this season. Car was exactly how I picked it up from the previous owner. She surprised me with 275hp @ 7300rpm I felt this was acceptable for 175k mike car! The car with me and almost a full tank weighed in at 3466lbs... sheís a heavy girl!

I have all my parts from my previous M3 so I went ahead and put everything on this one! I got the ISC N1 track coil overs installed along with my 18x9.5 et35 apex arc8/ 265/35r18 hankook rs-3s just in time for the first track day and first points race! Also running build journals track specs for alignment and suspension setup as well as 5mm front and 12mm rear spacers with apex 90mm stud conversion.

Sorry if I miss some things along the way, Iím posting from memory of a few months back.

I boiled my brake fluid at the first track day, stock fluid, 90ish degree temps. So I ordered up some Moutl 660. Ran it in my last car and never had an issue!

Second track day was at Chuckwalla, my first time there and it was an amazing weekend! My wife and I stayed in the cabins and it really was an awesome experience for anyone who hasnít been, go! I ended up placing first in TA on day one with a pretty slow 2:11.155 clockwise. Only suspension and tire mods along with some minor weight reduction. Managed to ďsend itĒ on the blind right/left before the bowl and pretty much destroyed one of my wheels and tires..

Placed first (of 2) on day two with another slow 2:11 counterclockwise. Went out for first session and the left front tire was flat, I had adjusted psi right before going to grid and everything was fine. Came in, inflated and it held the rear of the weekend (lucky) you can see in one of these pics how flat it was...

Apex was kind enough to let me send in my bent (center face bent and cracked) wheel and get another one at half cost! I absolutely love apex as a company and will continue to use them for many years!

Tire was cut as you can see.. was so bent that it made contact with the coilover, spun the lock ring and took all preload out of the spring!

Did a little weight reduction after chuckwalla. Removed the entire stereo harness as well as all speakers and equipment.

Also removed, cut and reinstalled the front door cards. Made my own trim piece to clean up the look. Used 1/4 turn fasteners to secure the plastic sheet to the door!

how did you like the ISC coilovers? I tracked my car with them last week and I'm extremely impressed with how they felt and held up with almost 3hrs of track driving in 1 day

I have the same feeling, for the money these are well worth it! They have performed very well for me. I got the "track" option from bimmerworld with the stiffer spring rates and couldn't be happier. I run the front at 13 "clicks" hard and the rear at 12. I forgot to adjust them once after the drive to the track and lets just say the first session was squirrely lol

nice!! yea I ended up with the street versions because the tracks were sold out and on back order.

I went full stiff in the front the back it down 6 clicks and the rear is on full stuff. so squirrely action here lol Must be because of the differnce in spring rates.

Yeah, I could just feel the car roll so much more with the suspension not properly adjusted. Will be an entirely new car this weekend tho!!

Default Re: Dylanís Track Rat Build

2 events ago I drove to the track (60 miles away) without issue.

First session out, 3 laps in I get a bucking coming out of turns and a CEL that would pop on and off every few corners. Decided to pull the car off track and that was it for the day.

After being in the heat all day I came to the conclusion that I had stuck an injector open, most likely #5. Also at the exact same time, the starter would not engage the flywheel... No code readers or scanners were available or compatible with my car (I asked a lot of people at the track)

Found my intake manifold had a puddle of fuel in it... not good and #5 piston looked wet on top while all other pistons looked dry. Had a buddy come pick me up with a trailer and took me to another friends shop.

Pulled codes and all cylinders had misfire codes.

Replaced the starter, removed spark plugs and cranked the car over and we had a waterfall of fuel shoot out of #5.

Ordered a bunch of parts from FCP:
Newest updated coils
Plugs
Liqui Moly 10-60
Oil filter
Fuel filter
Air filter

Found a set of 60k mile injectors out of an 06 local for $50 so I scooped them up!

Installed everything and all was good... so I thought.

Fast forward to last months event and again drive 60 miles one way to the track without issue only to have the eml light and cel come on with no throttle response during my first session...

This is my luck.

Checked everything I could think of and nothing was visibly wrong. Was lucky enough to find a fellow e46 that let me try his throttle pedal to see it that would fix my problem. It did not. Anything over 50% throttle would trigger the EML light. I had a p1637 I believe but canít remember exactly what it was.

Again limped the car home after another disappointing track day.

Wanted to cover my bases, due to the cars age and miles I figured if one of the throttle parts went bad, another would soon go.

I ordered from FCP:
Both TPS
Throttle pedal
Pedal plate (plastic that the pedal attaches to)

I also found two throttle actuators from fellow forum members here and bought those.

Installed everything... same issue. Iím thinking it has to be something STUPID and yup I was right.

Way back when I replaced the starter I remember repositioning the intake manifold boot clamps to make removing them easier... Well, I spun the fourth one just enough to where the throttle rod was catching on it! Not allowing the rod to move freely caused the CEL and EML lights...

Twisted the clamp and all is well with the car!

Now pics for fun

During the throttle fiasco I was also in the proces of getting my 4pt cage welded in and sparco seat installed. Love how it came out and will have more pics this weekend
