I got a metal gasket from thebmwminipartstore.com (others seem to sell paper??) and had no issues fitting it on straight, without any rtv. If the thermostat housing is off, you have some room and access. Make sure you replaced the pipe rubber orings, those can leak also.

On rtv, I would not use the regular black, it does not have the proper water resistance. If you really want to use some sort of sealant or gasket maker, get the one specific for water pumps, I believe permatex makes them (iirc they are in a green/blue tube).

That was my understanding. Not sure why a sea lent needed to be used in the application. Looks like the OEM metal gasket sits firm on top
