Default DMTL pump throwing SES light?

To start my 02' has 76,000 miles and my SES light came on the other day while I was driving home from work. I thought yes I hope it is a bad cat so I can get it replaced under the emissions warranty. Went to Autozone to have the code read and it read Bank 2 cat failure. I was really happy about this and called my friend (service tech) at the local BMW dealership and told him that I was bringing it by that I had cat failure. I dropped the car off and he called me back later and told me the code was thrown because of a DMTL pump problem. He told me that GT1 tool had picked up that the code had presented it's self to the DME 255 times and that it also showed 1 instance of cat failure. He told me that they couldn't claim the cat failure to BMW until the DMTL pump was replaced. I am pissed and unclear why this DMTL pump would have showed up 255 times in the DME and my SES light didn't come on until a couple days ago...sounds kinda fishy to me! If anyone has any experience with this issue please chime in I am at a lost as to what to do. I have to call the service tech back in the morn and let him know what I want to do. He tried to tell me that they were going to do the DMTL pump replacement at cost which would be about 350 out of my pocket.

The DME probably only records an error a max of 255 times (256-1 for no-error.) What is the "DMTL" pump? If it's the air-pump that injects air into the exhaust system on cold starts below 40F - it could have failed and not triggered a SES if the temperature hasn't been below 40F for a while... and the codes could have been stored.

If it is this pump - it could also cause a cat error since it's job is to fire off the cat's quickly on cold startup by injecting more air into the rich exhaust mixture. So.. they might be right. It could have caused your SES indirectly.

DMTL pump is something the vehicle uses to check if the EVAP system is leaking HC into the atmosphere, it's basically an emission device that is not covered under 8/80 (emission's warranty). And 255 times is not how the system stores it's fault counts. 255 times mean the fault is currently present, and each time the key is cycle and fault is not present it counts down from 255. This tells the technician if it's recent, pretty recent or decades ago.

Great info! So since it is reading 255 that means it was recent (last Fri) and the key hasn't recently cycled without the fault being present? When the key cycles without the fault being present it will then show 254, am I understanding this correctly?

I have heard in many cases this DMTL pump will set off the SES light even if the gas cap isn't tightened perfectly and a few people claimed the light popped up after an emission test (either the emission tester didn't put the cap back on correctly or they opened the gas tank while the car was still running). Which is very interesting because I just went and got my car emission tested a week ago. Could this be the cause of my SES light coming on a few days after the emissions test? Also is it common for the SES light to turn off a few days after it initially came on (without it being reset)? Because the light came on on Fri and turned it's self off on Mon while I was driving the car. I thought about calling BMW, getting them to reset the code, and then me drive the car for a few days to see if the SES light pops back on, does this sound like a good idea?

I had this same DTML pump failure on my prev 328i..apparently it's common with E46 models after a certain mileage.. it's located under & behind pass rear wheel flap area..I had a code for this and replaced at dealer..it's for emissions like a purge solenoid valve..
