i see you had overwhelming responses in your thread too

ps, i think P0420 is the cat in bank 1, and 0430 is bank 2 -- but yeah, i guess wait it out -- i had the SES light come on about 4 times in the past 2 years - i think mostly when my wife filled it up - probably with the key in pos 2 to run the a/c -- it always recycled off rather quickly -- 10 starts maybe

this time, though, the light was on for a good 2.5 weeks, although i wasnt driving it everyday during that time

as for the light going off by itself, im not sure that really means the problem went away, although if it didnt, i would presume the light should stay on

i wonder if i try to read the codes with the light off now, if i will throw the same P0430 code or not, guess that is the test

I would think it is your cats, but the bad thing is your out of warranty. Go for Headers.

Dealer just quoted me $2800 to replace cats-I won't be spending that much without some performance gains, so I am looking for aftermarket cats and/or headers (assuming my SES light stays on much longer)

$2800

no way would i spend that when i can go catless headers for $250, my boy EdwinM3 will install for beer and cigs, and then off to AA for software for another $600

no smog or emmision tests in Florida either so this is a no brainer, just dont tell Al Gore

I won't tell, but in PA we do have the inspections, so I will not be going catless, but maybe headers and race cats-if installed by me, should hopefully still be a savings over the dealer.

true that .. at least get some performance gains, save some money and be able to pass emissions

8 years 80K miles is required by federal law on emissions parts. Check the warranty book. It's in there, and specifically mentions cats as being covered. Cali actually has a broader warranty than just cats, but its only for 7/70.

It doesn't surprise me that an M3 would be hard on emissions equipment, as these are not ULEV or SULEV rated engines, in which case if it was, the cats wouldn't be working very hard because the motor would be clean as a baseline. Manufacturer's don't get a kicking 100hp/liter without being dirtier "emissions wise" than an everyday econobox. And as for 7/70 warranty find, good one to remember for the future!
