Well I verified you do need to remove the dash to get the side curtain out. Doh!

6 year old thread bump. Bought my M3 with the airbag light on, previous owner mentioned it was the module that was faulty. No biggie, didn't bother with diagnostics since I plan on removing the airbags anyways.

I can concur with the OP that simply removing the airbag module located underneath the cupholder and electric taping the ground wire will take away the airbag dash light. Just in case anyone else has this problem and is only interested in getting rid of the light.

This was commented in the Track section as well.. still doesn't make sense to me. Ground is ground, unless it's actually a low-side trigger and not ground..

You probably lost your seatbelt pre-tensioners too, however, I haven't confirmed if this car is new enough to have them.

I actually just replaced a seatbelt pretensioner an hour ago. It's definitely tied in to the airbag sytem, and it fires an explosive charge to tighten the big cable wire down (retracting the receiving end) just like how airbags are fired.

If you're pulling airbags, of course, you're damn near certainly using harnesses instead, in which case this doesn't matter... but if for whatever reason you're pulling airbags without that, bear in mind that your seatbelt won't work as well as it should, which exposes you to even more risk than just removing the airbag does.
