I'm having trouble as well. The SMG would not go to neutral so I wouldn't start the car..... it took a couple mins for it to finally start, then the SMG light comes on....

i learned it the hard way. always change your battery in 4-5 years or when the battery go boom, it will kill your alternator along with it and maybe causing some other sh!t problem as well.

Brought my car to the dealership on Monday.... So far they've been working to BMW NA to try to resolve the problem and run through various test (SMG pump pressure, replacing new relays, etc) to no avail.....

Good thing I'm still under warranty.

Default Re: orange smg light on?

I bought a 2002 M3 Convertible w 45K on it last December and the car wouldn't crank quite as strong as it should, but always started. I was in a drive through and the car just shut off and smg light was solid, I checked the hood switch and that wasn't it. I changed the Salmon Colored Relay which seems to be a common failure and that didn't do it either. So I had the car towed in and of course the freakin car cranks up for them. I told them to check the battery and diagnose and it. They said it through a few codes which they cleared out, but thought it was resolved- no parts - woo hoo! right? The car started doing it again intermitently a couple days later- solid yellow SMG light, car wouldn't go into gear, so I left in the driveway until I had time to mess with it again. Went out to crank it and battery was dead. Replaced battery and been running fine and actually shifts smoother for two weeks now... Sorry to be long winded, but hope to save someone a tow bill and a $200 diagnostic for nothing!

Bump.... My battery is fine, so is my alt... I noticed that once I tried starting my car and it just kept cranking over, slapped the SMG to 1 and back to 0 and it started right up.. Its done that twice now!

Any other solutions to this, as my trans shifts perfect?!
