Default airbag light on when someone is riding shotgun

when i'm driving alone it's off, when im driving someone in the passenger seat the light comes on, took my car in for inspection 2 just now and they didn't do anything about it (said they can't or would have to charge me extra) what can i do? is the airbag ACTUALLY bad? or is it just the sensor? is there anyway to check/replace it if it's the sensor?

thanks!
jon

sounds like either a bad belt tensioner or seat occupancy sensor

There is a srs scan tool for diagnosing problems with the "supplemental restraint system"
before you go throwing parts you may want to see exactly what is causing the light to be triggered. It may very well be the occupancy sensor but I find it odd that the light goes back out if the seat isn't weighted. Usually the light stays on if a fault is triggered.

there are a few members that will rent you this tool if you are trying to diy. Pm me and I'll forward you their info

oh interesting, so would i just stick it in the obd2 slot and it would tell me what's wrong? can i just go to pepboys or something and get them to do this for me? if not then the info to rent would be great as well, any idea how much they would rent it for?
thanks

I doubt pepboys can do this, yes it does plug into the OBDII port but a standard OBDII code reader doesnt read/ reset the airbag light (SRS system is separate). You will need this... http://www.peakeresearch.com/srstool.htm

i got a similar issue, airbag light only goes on when someone is riding in the passenger seat AND wears a seat belt. If they don't wear a seatbelt - no light. (The light also turns off when there is no passenger in the seat).
Would this confirm that its a BELT TENSIONER rather than the SEAT OCCUPANCY SENSOR since its only on when the seatbelt is worn? or could it still be either one?
thanks

Have any of you with this problem found a resolution?

I'm experiencing the same problem. When I have a passenger, the airbag light comes on intermittently. It comes on for a few minutes then turns off. A few minutes later, it comes back on.

I'm going to get it scanned before I start throwing parts at it, but I want to know what I'm in for.

got mine scanned it's the pad
just wondering does anyone know if this error light will affect the performance of the airbag? like if a collision were to occur would airbag still deploy?
