Default Noise from load reversal on manual gear shift… Normal??

Hello everyone,

Soon after purchasing my 08 E90 I began to occasionally hear a metallic “clanking” sound when driving in lower gears (sometimes, not always). I had a local BMW mechanic ride with me in the car to get his opinion, and he told me it was a normal noise caused by the load reversal during manual gear shift… He said it wasn’t anything to worry about, unless it starts to happen at a higher frequency. The noise is just unsettling to me, so I wanted to get a different opinion(s)… Is it indeed normal??

I am taking my car to a friend’s shop after hours this week to get it up on a lift and look around. He services, repairs, and restores exotic, classic, sports, and race cars so I feel like he will give me good advice. But, I wanted to put this question out there on an M3 specific forum to see if this was in fact a normal sound that these particular cars make. Also, if it is something that does require my attention - what sort of repairs would be needed to address it.

I hope this isn’t too silly of a question. I am new to M3s and I would rather ask a silly question than ignore a potential issue before it becomes a big problem.

Worth mentioning - besides this the car is in great shape mechanically, no other problems. This seems to be the only issue, but maybe it is a non-issue... I hope

Thank you! Mary
