Default Airbag Inflator Recall

Have you guys seen this? http://www.autoblog.com/2014/06/23/a...rd-and-toyota/

Quote:
BMW is recalling an undisclosed number of 325i, 325Xi, 330i and 330Xi models from the 2001 through 2005 model years and the 2001-2006 model year versions of the 325Ci and 330Ci for the driver side and passenger side inflators. Only vehicles currently registered in Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands are covered under this recall.
I know the M3 isn't on that list, but it should be. We have the same airbags as any other E46

Some of the reports are kinda scary

Quote:
Three injuries were reported in those six complaints. NHTSA described them as "minor" in nature, and in paperwork filed with the agency, Honda described an injury sustained in an accident on August 6, 2013, as resulting from "an energetic deployment of a driver's airbag."

In that incident, the driver lost sight in the right eye.

"The diver (sic) side airbag inflator ruptured and propelled a one-inch piece of shrapnel into the driver's right eye," according to a complaint filed with NHTSA. "Loss of sight and severe lacerations to nose requiring 100 stitches."

Details
Manufacturer: BMW of North America, LLC

SUMMARY:
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is conducting a limited regional recall for certain model year 2001-2005 325i, 325xi, 330i, and 330xi, and 2001-2006 325Ci and 330Ci vehicles currently registered in Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and equipped with Takata-brand air bag inflators. Upon deployment of the driver side and/or passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.

CONSEQUENCE:
In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of either of the frontal air bags, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the vehicle occupants.

REMEDY:
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the frontal air bag(s) free of charge. This recall is expected to begin during August 2014. Owners may contact BMW Customer Relations at 1-800-525-7417.

NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
As the recall is not expected to begin until August, I don't think anyone's car was fixed for this issue. Any previous replacements might have been for the previous Takata recall

what the hell? I need to do more research. I'd rather not have the airbag than have it blow my eye off. Wonder what the difference is and why only a handful of states have the recall.

Supposedly moisture is the problem, so they're only recalling cars in humid areas. Thing is, no one seems to be 100% sure that the humidity is the issue, and there are regions outside of those states/territories that are humid (not to mention cars that have exchanged hands over the years).

That's weird, this notice has been out for a while and I received a letter from BMW about it (don't know where I put it though). Kinda makes me wonder if Autoblog got the whole story.

Odd, I live in one of the most humid states (washington) and we are not included either. Didn;t even think about the cars that exchanged hands x number of times. BMW has rubbed me the wrong way again and again, it is incredible what cheap bastards they are. I hear there are some nice AMG's available, anyone else jumping ship with me lol?

Interesting. I definitely didn't get any kind of notice from BMW (I'm in PA). There was a separate recall last year, but I think that only included 02-03 models

To be fair, it's not just BMW limiting the recall to those places. Most affected manufacturers are. Only Honda expanded the region, but even they're not doing a nationwide recall. Yet.

Would you mind posting up your recall paperwork and things they sent you?

This was for your M3, correct?

Can you imagine what might happen to a passenger? Geez....
