Default how old should oil get before it should be changed?

I don't drive my M3 much, about 4k miles in the last year, and I'm wondering what's considered old oil before it's too old and should be changed? I know the rule of thumb is to change every 7-8k miles on our synthetic blend. Mine is a weekend car however so that could take 2 years. I just changed mine a week ago, driven it about 3.5k miles, the oil was about 10 months old. I live in VA and it's not garaged, so it goes through temperature changes...

BMW recommends an annual oil change if your mileage doesn't reach a point where the change is called for based on use.

When I first got mine, my SA actually told me to come in before my inspection was due because it had been a year since the oil was changed, but the mileage on the service indicator still had a good bit left to go. And they did it for free under the maintenance contract.

Lightbulb

According to the "BMW Maintenance System" section of the owner's manual:

The calculation of the service intervals covers practically every kind of operating situation. If you drive very rarely, however, you should have the oil changed at least every two years, since engine oil deteriorates over time regardless of use.

I also have the same scenario like you. Weekend car. I go for at least once a year. You're safe on that one per 9 out of 10 inquery.
