Question P0420 Catalyst Efficiency Question and Introduction

Happy Holidays all!

I picked up a lower mile 01' M3 about a month ago, having come from the E36 M3 world. I am finally getting a chance to check things out and start a maintenance routine. That said I have a question about the 02 sensors.

Does anyone have a definitive guide to 02 sensor routing and placement? I searched but I am still uncertain.

The reason I ask is that I put the SS race cats on that PO had taken off and replaced with the stock sec 1. Needless to say the O2 positions are a bit unclear so I took the lower two he had in the headers and put them in the post cat positions. (had to route them around the drivers side etc.)

Initially this setup with the stock tune passed smog about a month ago before it got really cold, but now I am seeing a pending P0420 code and wonder if I have the 02's mixed up or if the SS race cats are not cold weather friendly.

Any info / thoughts would be great. Thanks to all for the great DIY section, I'll be putting that to work soon.

P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

My guess is that you don't have them plugged in correctly.

Thanks I'm certainly unsure, I need to find a way to identify them all and get them in the right spots. Any wise words on connector type or length helping sort this out?

I had an M3 with a P0430 code, it turned out that the recall wasn't done. See if this applies to you.

Thanks Kevblah, I'll check it out and see, not sure if the 01's got any love with that service campaign.

If this is a long term issue with the race cats is there a tune that has the 02update?

Anyone happen to have a good breakout of the 02 sensors and how to ID them so I can make sure I have the right ones in the right bungs?

Thanks Mattman! I'll pull the plastic off the valve cover and check things out, btw, what do the "key" notations mean?
