Yea i've taken it to the dealer twice already on this issue. The car will crank but will not start. I try starting it again for a second time and it cranks right up. It bothers me a little bit but just as long as it does start on the second try, i can deal with it. Im gonna try taking the car to another dealer and see if they can see what it is since my dealer can't find any problems.

Well, BMW Service has now had my car for 2 weeks. It took them about a week and half and flying in a specialist to figure out what was going on. Everyone at the shop was stumped. They were able to trace the problem back to a small short on the ECU circuit board and are replacing the whole ECU as we speak.

Pretty big deal. I'll post a follow-up once i get the car back and find out all the specifics.

Well...that could be reasonable but the key recharges everytime it is used to start the car (owners manual suggests all the power keys be used 2 or so times a year to keep them charged.) Even if it was a weak key...I cant see why that would matter.

Well the morning after the dealer spent 2 WEEKS working on it. . . it doesn't start until the third try. Unacceptable. The problem persists.

What's my recourse if they can't figure it out?? I paid 60k for a car it BETTER start on the first try. Yes it's 3yrs old and has 36k miles but that's not an excuse.

Any thoughts?

Hey....any news on this issue????
I'm having the same problem, but it only happens when the car sits for a day or two without starting....then when I go to start it, I get NO start on the first try (no matter how long I crank it) but on the second try it starts right up. Again, this only happens when the car sits more then 24 hours without starting.....once the car starts, I can restart it on the first try every time.....but if it sits overnight, the next day I get the same problem...the are won't start on the first try (cranks but won't start), second try starts right up.

I have try a fews things....like building up the fuel pressure before starting....but it still does it.

What do you guys think is the issue??????

I have had this same issue as well just recently after I put in a new tank of gas. I did various searches on the forum and came across this:

http://m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=256993

I'm guessing that it is the summer mixture of gas that causes this problem. A lot of other people have had this same issue. It could also be the fuel filter, but I'm guessing you'd see other issues in addition to this one if that was the case.

I would use the other remote master key and see if the problem reoccurs. Common for remote master keys to lay down. When this happens the engine will not crank, but all lights on the dash will work. Tech's can go in and see if a key is enabled or not, and also view key number. True that the key is charged through ignition but they still go bad. You are most likely throwing your money out the window if you replace your starter or battery for an intermittent problem.
