Default Help: I have All the CEL misfires

I have invented a new game: BMW Bingo. Anytime your get a CEL for one area of the car, the goal is to get CELs for the whole set. For instance, I had misfires yesterday for the first time in 10 months. And I got 10. 6/6 on warmup, and 4/6 while driving.

Here are the codes I pulled from the PEAKE reader.

What the hell happened? Car drove fine in the morning, then took a big one in the afternoon.

Table 1b

OE - small tank leak

62 - Secondary air system, flow too high

50 - switch chain grip

CD - misfire during warm up #1

CE- misfire during warmup cylinder 2

D1 - Misfire during warmup #5

D0 - #4

CF - during warmup #3

D2 - #6

D5 - multiple cylinders

C9 - misfire cylinder 6

C4 - Misfire cylinder 1

C7 - cylinder 4

C8 - Misfire cylinder 5

CC - misfire multiple cylinders

So what are you asking for help with?

Suggestions to change plugs/coils?

What have you done or not done maintenance-wise?

Sounds like a fun game, lol.

Default Re: Help: I have All the CEL misfires

I guess I was a bit vague.

Last year I changed 2 coils, and all plugs. The coils were the front 2 cylinders. 1 had gone bad (I did the coil-switching test with a functioning one), and one was frozen in, so I changed that one (after much work).

All has been relatively well since then. SES light comes on, and turns off, when it wants to.

On the day of the code party, I had driven to work without issue. Got coffee, get back in car, and it starts idling horrible and feels like I'm trying to leave a stop sign in 4th gear.

So it went from fine > 10 misfires.

Looking for advice on how to diagnose this. I don't want to buy all 6 coil packs unless I know I need them. I already ordered new plugs.

Some advice I got (from a VW tech) was to unplug the ECU, and battery. Possible bad connection somewhere would explain why all the cylinders freaked out at the same time.

So this will be 2nd time in 1-1.5 years that you replace the plugs, but not the remaining 4 coils? Coils go out sometimes.

When you say it went from fine to 10 misfires, what is telling you the "10"? You have a misfire counter you are watching?

What is the condition/age of your o2 sensors, especially the two precat ones?

What about maf?

One or two misfires - coil packs. Multiple misfires - VANOS solenoid pack.

I'd also suspect the crankshaft position sensor.

I say "10 misfires" because (as shown above) I had 6 cylinders misfiring on warmup and 4 misfiring while driving. So, 10 (in a weird math way).

MAF was cleaned a year ago. I can clean it out again.

o2 sensors - Tried to change one last year and could not remove my heat shield . My car has a giant one piece heat shield, and all the tutorials I found were for 2 piece shields. I needed the car and had spent 6 hours on it already so I gave up. I still have a new o2 sensor I'll be putting in.

It seems unlikely that 4 coils all go bad on the same day, at the exact same moment, no?

I will look up VANOs solenoid pack.

Thank you to everyone chiming in.
