Default Rattling at 2500 rpm upwards

Hi guys Iíve currently got a 2004 m3 over the last few months itís got a rattle happening from 2500rpm to about 3200rpm on light throttle . I originally thought it was the head gasket so did a compression test to find itís only down on compression in 1 cylinder the very back one . Down about 20 psi from the rest.. I recently checked my valve clearances as well and had 1 valve out which was also for that cylinder on the intake side so got new shim an corrected the gap . Has any one got any ideas where I need to be looking for this rattle as itís really annoying and Iím wanting to sell the car soon. Cheers

Can you describe the rattle? If itís a random irregular cadence it could be ďpingingĒ or detonation in the cylinder with low compression. I had the noise under light throttle b/t 2500-3500rpm. Turned out I was down on compression on all cylinders.

How do your plugs look?

It sounds like a marble in a jar sort of,or a metallic rattle if that makes sense , if I put my foot down it doesn’t do it at all only on gentle throttle. Plugs all look good no irregular colours or oil etc

Was the shim you adjusted too thick and you went to a thinner one? Just trying to see if your compression would increase from the valve adjustment itself if the valve was staying open. Did you redo the compression test after the adjustment? And 20psi is a BIG diff.

+1 on recording of the noise.

Yes I put a thinner shim in the feeler gauge 0.007 wouldnít fit in it originally and yes I no thatís a big difference it was down 40 psi before I did the shim but obviously something somewhere isnít right . Iím no mechanic either btw lol

Could you record the noise? Does it happen when car is cold or after it warms up?

Could be several things - vanos, water pump, or rod knock (as Eric found out after bullet proofing his vanos and checking the water pump).

Three things rattle on this car. A spun bearing, vanos, and a rattle snake. That's pretty much it.
