Default HOWTO: SMG Accumulator Pressure Test

If you're having issues with your SMG pump you have the option of replacing the accumulator independent of the whole pump assembly. Before taking this step you should test the accumulator. This guide explains how to do so.

Should you be considering refurbishing your SMG pump to replace the motor and/or temperature sensor, I would advise conducting this test before your pump dies as you'd not want to go to all that effort and then be reinstalling a bad accumulator.

Note that this isn't a tutorial in getting DIS/GT1 running. The following assumes you'd achieved that.

Having connected everything up and go DIS running, click the Diagnosis button. Note that in the screenshot below I didn't have an active connection to the car, so there is no corresponding signal strength. All other screenshots were taken during the test procedure itself.

Then select the Series, in this case the 3 Series.

Then select the Model series, E46 and click the green arrow in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

You will probably see a voltage warning unless you connect a charger. Whilst I would recommend connecting a charger if coding the car, in this instance it is safe (at your own risk!) to proceed. Click OK.

You'll then be invited to perform a Quick Test. Click OK.

DIS will then identify the modules in your car and display those in finds white on black rather than black on white as shown below. Click Quick test.

DIS will then read the error codes stored in each module. A pass is indicated by a '!', whilst a fail is indicated with a 'x'. In the image below it can be seen that I had some stored errors associated with my IHKA and LSZ.

You'll probably also see some prompts for additional information an example of which is shown below. Click OK.

Click the green arrow in the bottom right hand corner which will take you to the Diagnosis Symptom Selection screen. This lists all the issues stored related to the car. This shows quite a list here which I have chosen to show for illustration, but they're a consequence of the battery having had a loose connection a short while ago and had yet to be cleared. Click the green arrow in the bottom right hand corner.

This takes you to the Diagnosis Test schedule screen. Click on Function selection.

This will allow you to select the accumulator test service function. Select it as shown and then click Test schedule to take you back to the previous screen.

You'll now see this test listed under Own test schedule. Ensure it is selected and click on the green arrow in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

The test then starts with an explanation of the likely symptom. Click on the green arrow in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

You'll then probably get another voltage warning. Ignore it by clicking on the green arrow in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

Conditions for the test are then listed. Ignition must be on and engine off. Click on the green arrow in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

The end of test message is then displayed. Click the green arrow in the bottom right corner of the screen to return to the Test schedule listing.

You're welcome. There are virtually no guides to using DIS online, so I figured this might be helpful.
