Default Tire Pressure Monitor - How does it work? - Sensor in the tire?

Anyone know where the sensor are located? and how they work?

Thanks!

FTM stands for the Flat Tire Monitor. As air leaks, tire pressure decreases, and the tire rotates faster. ABS sensors on the wheels detect a change in wheel rotation speeds, which signifies a change in the roll radius, or pressure level, of the tires. A warning light in the instrument panel notifies the driver of the pressure loss. In case of significant pressure loss, a warning buzzer sounds.

TPM - Tire Pressure Monitor. Basically a two piece item, a special air valve as well as a module that is on the inside of the rim and connects to the valve stem. This unit monitors the actual pressure inside the rim. (This was introduced in the 2007 model year)

our car uses the ABS to sense different rolling circumferences (RPM), thus telling you that you potentially have a tire going flat...

when you change your wheels and tires, just reset the sucker and go on about your business...

mine always go off and I check tire pressure and it's fine. Personally I think the older TPM set up's in E46's were rushed to get into compliance with federal law under Clinton's TREAD Act. Actually as of September 1, 2007 all new cars MUST have some sort of tire pressure monitoring system. It never works right in comparison with our 545i. When that thing says you have a flat tire or low tire pressure, it's dead on.

The E46 doesn't have a TPM, it has a FTM. Look at the above posts to learn the differences between the two.

True tire pressure monitor systems have valve stems that measure air pressure and send a radio signal to a receiver mounted in the passenger compartment. This is the most direct way possible to monitor flat tires.
