Listen I don't own any M right now, but the only thing I would get rid of the E46 M3 in your situation would be for a... E92 M3. If I had the money for it and all.

Is your M3 your daily driver? If so I can understand somewhat.

I would keep it and get whatever second car you want. You won't get much for if you sell.

I feel like an E92 M3 is the logical choice
The 335 is still old, not that special, and will still cost $$$ in regular repairs and has lots of known issues
Besides the .001% of E92 M3 owners that had engine issues, it's the most reliable BMW ever made, and more special and fun to drive than a 335.
Plus prices on the 08 and 09s make them VERY attractive deals right now

This... not gonna lie, my 335is with full suspension and everything is a extremely solid car, like almost as solid as my E46, but with torque, a better car to drive around town IMO. The N54 is an amazing engine if you take care of it, You can't go wrong with the 335is, but you will have to put some money into it to get it to E46 M3 level, although my n55 335i on the otherhand, not really a contender. So if you were to get a 335i, get an N54. But be prepared to do some work to get it up to "standard". But do not get an auto, I think the big reason I dislike my n55 is because it's auto. It's a terrible transmission, the 8 speed zf is far more superior.

If this is a hard decision for you, just save up for an F8x.

It's the turbo M car, kicks the shit out of any E9x and you don't have to mod it to tolerate it.

Would MAYBE consider a 135i. Definitely not a 335i though

The 335 coupes have pretty flimsy chassis that's easily evident over bumps at speed - stuff the 46M coupe will just eat up. Further, if you start pushing the 335 in the corners it will let you down very early, at about 6/10s - you can literally feel the rear sub frame squirm in its bushings giving the car a very unstable feeling. Drive the speed limit and this doesn't happen - drive the car like an M car and you will be massively unimpressed.

I say this passionately because I borrowed my buddy's 335 couple 6MT last weekend for a couple days - he needed my truck so we swapped. And believe me - I drove the piss out of that thing. Fast, yes, but very flimsy and imprecise and only marginally more comfortable (stock vs stock). He's the original owner, it has been properly maintained and has 80k miles on it so certainly not worn out. Brand new PSS tires, etc.

It's literally like night and day IF you drive your M like an M. It is a massive step backwards unless you just want a fast, sporty DD. But even then it just feels like an old, nothing special Bimmer. Good for its time but definately not good anymore. The 46M still kicks ass.

Yeah, it's my daily and no room for a second car.

The cheapest 2008 M3 around here is 36k. I see E46 M3s going for 15-25k. 335's for 15-20k.
